Learning something new can be a scary experience. One of the hardest things that we
ever have to do was learn how to swim especially to most of us that do not know how to
because some of us that don’t know, we lack the courage and are always afraid to go near the
water especially those that are deep, unlike our classmates that already knew how to swim, it
doesn’t bother them because they are confident enough despite the depth of the water. Although
swimming could be difficult to learn but many individuals already know, it is still important
that we should learn the basics and understand some rules in water safety especially to us
criminology students because we don’t know if one day we could apply it, swimming is also a
good exercise that could help us improve our physical fitness. To those in our group that who
don’t know how to swim, didn’t realize that learning to swim would increase their confidence
and that it could make them overcome their fears. It is difficult for those that do not know how
to swim because they’re afraid that they would drown and that it would decrease their self-
esteem. In addition, learning is part of a student and as a human being, learning is how we
grow, and learning increases our knowledge and skills. As to those that already knew how to
swim they can manage and relate easily to the subject matter, but as sir Rommel and ma’am
Balance said, in water rescue even you are an expert swimmer, you should always prioritize
your safety in any incident that you are responding, such as drowning incident, always check
your safety and in responding in such we should always have somebody to accompany us. As a
swimmer and non-swimmer, we should not panic and we should relax in responding so that we
know what to do, panic could lead to more difficult situations for the responder and the
drowning person, that it could endanger them both. Even if we already knew how to swim, in
all accident situations, our safety as a responder should always be the first priority.

It makes us nervous when we learn new things in life, for instance, learning and having
knowledge about safety precautions when going for a swim. It’s very important that we acquire
such skills and understanding about this subject matter which is water safety and swimming
because it is not just an activity or a sport, it is an exercise or a skill set that should be learned
and mastered properly for it could save lives someday, having the proper understanding and
knowledge could save lives and reduce the number of drowning incidents. For non-swimmers,
this could help them overcome their fear and boost their confidence going in the pool of water.
As a student, we learned so much about the subject First Aid and Water Safety, we
gained new knowledge on how to respond in times of emergencies, how to give proper first aid,
how to give proper CPR, how to act during an incident that involves casualties, and how to
properly respond on a drowning situation. After a series of discussions on our first lessons until
the last, we were finally going to our actual activity on Water Safety. We were instructed by
Ma’am Balence Patingan that we are going to be handled by Sir Rommel O. Fecha instead of
her, so Sir Fecha set our schedule on Saturday (January 21, 2023) 6:30 am, the venue was the
Mara’s Riverine swimming pool at Samoki where he will be teaching us the subject matter. On
that day, we went to the venue and we gathered and waited for our other classmates to come
and attend. As we are waiting, sir Fecha came and at the entrance of the resort as he is entering,
he smiled and we greeted him good morning and he responded to us, after that Sir Fecha
instructed one of our classmates to collect the waiver that are signed by our guardians and also
told us to include checking our attendance by section and by group. As we are waiting, more of
our classmates and group mates came, when we we’re almost complete, Sir Fecha instructed us
to go near the swimming pool and stood there timidly while waiting for others.
On the day of our Activity, Sir Fecha taught us the different Water Safety Styles that we
should know, at first we did some warm up exercises to condition and ready our mind and
bodies. We were told to go and submerge our bodies in the swimming pool and Sir Fecha begun
teaching us safety breathing and coordination techniques which is the inhaling and exhaling
method, inhale through the nose and exhale through mouth, next was making bubbles with the
use of our mouth while our head is submerged under the water for five seconds, after doing it a
couple of times we then go to the next which is the same step but this time we hold our breath
under water for also five seconds, after a couple of tries then we move on to the next exercise
which is the bending and touching our toes under water for five seconds, and after doing it a
couple of times we then moved to the next which is bending and holding on to our knees under
water for five seconds, sir Fecha said, the purpose of the last exercise is to make us realize that
our bodies float, which was actually true because for some of our classmates that are non-
swimmers, they were intrigued and sir just made them realize that and that made them increase
their confidence in learning how to swim. So in the next exercise that Sir Fecha will be teaching
was meant for the non-swimmers, but not because some of us already knew how to swim we
shouldn’t disregard and miss the opportunity to learn and increase our knowledge about the
basics and proper ways of the locomotion and the range of how many limbs should maneuver in
the water while swimming. In our next activity, sir Fecha started to teach some of the non-
swimmers the basics of swimming, firstly is the floating part while paddling the feet to tread the
water, next step is the paddling of hands while floating, in doing it hand must be straight and
should be done alternately with the other hand and feet must be continuously treading the water,
he also taught us that being calm and relax are key essentials in swimming to stay afloat as well
as to be efficient in the water without the judder or tiredness. After some tries and practices, Sir
Fecha then showed us and taught us how to use the life vests and instructed us to swim freestyle
and back stroke while wearing it in the water. From that activity, we didn’t just learn how to
swim but we also learned how to control our breathing inside the water and do the proper way
to inhale air while swimming.
Water safety is not just to teach us how to swim but also to help us build self-confidence,
self-esteem, and to learn how to socialize with other people, especially to our classmates/own
groupings. This encourages us to discipline ourselves and gave us lessons that we can use and
apply in some instances like emergencies and gave us the upper hand to save other people from
dangerous situations.

As a student taking up the course Bachelor of Science in Criminology, First Aid and
Water Safety should be one of the skills that we as Criminology Students obtain, this activity
could improve our physical fitness and stabilize our mental capacity because in providing first
aid and water safety we should be physically capable and mentally stable without panic and that
we should be relaxed and calm.
With the teachings of Ma’am Balance and the guide and help of Sir. Fecha from the first
until the end, from his patiently teaching and sharing his idea, lesson, and knowledge about
water safety. We the group 3 from section M gained many lesson that we can carry through out
our life, such us proper safety, technique in swimming, and kinds of swimming that we can
apply or used by saving a life. In performing swimming we should always observe safety first
because danger is everywhere and we can’t tell when or where it will happen, that’s why we
should always be alert and observe safety first.
In this activity that we had, we really enjoyed it even though the weather is cold, it is also
a time or opportunity for us as a classmates to have a bonding time with each other, to relax,
refreshen our mind.

#Sir Fecha instructed us to Perform Warm-up Exercises While Waiting for Our
Classmates to Come
# Sir Fecha told us to go and submerge our bodies in the swimming pool and he began
teaching us safety breathing and coordination techniques.
#our non-swimmer Classmates began learning the basics of swimming, started from the
floating, and treading of feet, then to the paddling of hands going back and forth.

#swimmers and non-swimmers combined to try and experience using the life vests.
#we went to perform the styles of swimming taught to us by sir Fecha.
#after our activity we took a group picture for evidence.
#it’s almost lunch time and our other groupmates were cooking for our lunch.
