INTRODUCTION

CONCEPT DISCUSSION

The implementation of a 4-hour class a day for STEM (science, technology,

engineering, and mathematics) students at National University – Nazareth School is an
interesting concept that could have several potential benefits and challenges. Here are some
points to consider:

Benefits:
● Longer class hours can provide students with more time to engage in direct learning
activities, problem-solving exercises, and group projects, which are essential
components of STEM education.
● By reducing the number of subjects taught in a day, students can focus more on
each subject and develop a deeper understanding of the concepts.
● With fewer subjects to prepare for each day, teachers can have more time to plan
their lessons, provide more feedback on students' work, and tailor their teaching to
individual student needs.
● A longer school day can also provide opportunities for extracurricular activities,
such as STEM clubs, research projects, and competitions.

Challenges:
● A 4-hour class may be mentally and physically exhausting for some students,
especially if the classes are primarily lecture-based and lack opportunities for
movement or breaks.
● Longer class hours may also require more resources, such as classroom space,
materials, and teacher support, which could be challenging for schools with
limited budgets.
● Some students may find it difficult to balance a longer school day with other
commitments, such as after-school jobs, sports, or family responsibilities.
● Teachers may also experience burnout if they are not given adequate support and
resources to manage the longer school day.
To successfully implement a 4-hour class a day for STEM students at National
University – Nazareth School, it is essential to consider the potential benefits and
challenges and develop strategies to address them. For example, schools could incorporate
movement breaks, hands-on learning activities, and student-led discussions to prevent

mental and physical exhaustion. They could also provide additional resources, such as
professional development opportunities for teachers, STEM materials, and technology to
support student learning. Additionally, schools could consider offering flexible scheduling
options for students who have other commitments, such as evening or weekend classes.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

National University – Nazareth School is a private school in the Philippines that

offers K-12 education. As part of their curriculum, the school provides specialized
education in STEM subjects, which include science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics. The implementation of a 4-hour class a day for STEM students at National
University – Nazareth School is a proposed concept that aims to enhance the quality of
STEM education by providing more time for students to engage in hands-on learning
activities, problem-solving exercises, and group projects.

The idea of a longer school day for STEM students is not new, and many schools
around the world have already implemented similar programs. For example, some schools
in the United States have adopted a "STEM block" schedule, which involves longer class
periods for STEM subjects and a reduced number of subjects taught each day. The purpose
of this schedule is to allow students to have more in-depth learning experiences and provide
teachers with more time to plan and deliver effective lessons.
The implementation of a 4-hour class a day for STEM students at National
University – Nazareth School is still in the proposal stage, and the school administration
would need to carefully consider the potential benefits and challenges before planning. If
implemented successfully, this program could enhance the quality of STEM education at
the school and provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in STEM-
related careers.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The implementation of a 4-hour class a day for STEM students at National University
– Nazareth School could have significant benefits for both the students and the school.
Here are some of the potential significances of this implementation:

● Enhanced STEM Education: By providing students with more time to engage in

hands-on learning activities, problem-solving exercises, and group projects, this
program could enhance the quality of STEM education at the school. Students
would have more opportunities to develop critical thinking skills, creativity, and
critical thinking skills, which are essential for success in STEM-related careers.

● Improved Student Performance: Longer class hours can allow teachers to deliver
more effective lessons and provide students with more individualized attention,
feedback, and support. This could lead to improved student performance in STEM
subjects and increased student engagement and motivation.

● Preparation for College and Careers: With a focus on STEM education, students
would be well-prepared for college and careers in STEM fields. The skills and
knowledge gained through this program could help students succeed in higher
education and compete for high-paying STEM jobs.

● Increased Enrollment: The implementation of this program could also attract more
students to the school, particularly those interested in pursuing STEM-related
careers. This could lead to increased enrollment and revenue for the school, which
could be reinvested in the program to further enhance the quality of STEM
education.

Overall, the implementation of a 4-hour class a day for STEM students at National
University – Nazareth School could have significant benefits for the students, the school,
and the broader community. It could help prepare students for success in the 21st-century
economy, enhance the school's reputation, and contribute to the development of a highly
skilled STEM workforce in the Philippines.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The implementation of a 4-hour class a day for STEM students at National

University – Nazareth School would have a defined scope and limitations. Here are some
of the potential scope and limitations of this program:
Scope:
● Focus on STEM Education: The primary focus of this program is to enhance the
quality of STEM education at the school by providing more time for students to
engage in hands-on learning activities, problem-solving exercises, and group
projects.

5 | Page
Republic of the Philippines

● Individualized Attention: Longer class hours can allow teachers to provide more
individualized attention, feedback, and support to students, which can help improve
their performance in STEM subjects.

● Flexible Scheduling: The school could consider offering flexible scheduling

options for students who have other commitments, such as evening or weekend
classes.

● Extracurricular Activities: A longer school day can also provide opportunities for
extracurricular activities, such as STEM clubs, research projects, and competitions.

Limitations:

● Resource Constraints: The implementation of this program may require additional

resources, such as classroom space, materials, and teacher support, which could be
challenging for schools with limited budgets.

● Burnout: Longer class hours may increase the risk of burnout for both students and
teachers, particularly if the classes are primarily lecture-based and lack
opportunities for movement or breaks.

● Student Commitments: Some students may find it difficult to balance a longer

school day with other commitments, such as after-school jobs, sports, or family
responsibilities.

● Impact on Other Subjects: A reduced number of subjects taught each day could
potentially impact the quality of education in other subjects outside of STEM.

It is essential to carefully consider these scope and limitations before implementing a

4-hour class a day for STEM students at National University – Nazareth School. The school
administration should develop a comprehensive plan that addresses potential challenges
and provides strategies to mitigate them. This program should also be regularly evaluated
to ensure that it is meeting its intended objectives and improving the quality of STEM
education at the school.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM AND HYPOTHESIS

The problem addressed by the proposed implementation of a 4-hour class a day for
STEM students at National University – Nazareth School is the need to enhance the quality
of STEM education and prepare students for success in the 21st-century economy. The
current curriculum may not provide students with enough time for hands-on learning,
problem-solving exercises, and group projects in STEM subjects, which can limit their
ability to develop critical thinking skills and compete for high-paying STEM jobs.

The hypothesis of the proposed implementation of a 4-hour class a day for STEM
students at National University – Nazareth School is that providing more time for students
to engage in hands-on learning activities, problem-solving exercises, and group projects in
STEM subjects will lead to improved student performance, increased engagement, and
preparation for college and careers in STEM fields. The longer class hours could also
attract more students to the school and enhance its reputation for quality STEM education.
However, there may be challenges, such as resource constraints and the risk of burnout,
which need to be addressed to ensure the success of this program.

A. How many subjects should Senior Highschool students learn in a span of 4-8 hours
of classes?
- In a span of 4-8 hours of classes, SHS students should have at least 1-2 subjects for
their understanding would not be overloaded with too much information daily.

B. Does having 4-hour classes whether online or in school effective for higher grade
levels such as Senior Highschool students?
- Yes, because higher grade level students are more on activities and groupworks,
they need more time for those rather than lectures.

C. What are the effects of having a 4-hour class whether online or face to face to Senior
Highschool students?
- SHS students would manage their time well, have more time for leisure, less stress,
and would have enough rest.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

There is research specifically related to a 4-hour school day, but there have been
studies conducted on the optimal length of the school day more generally. Some educators
and experts argue that shorter school days may be more appropriate for younger children,
as they have shorter attention spans and may become tired more easily. However, others
suggest that longer school days may be necessary for older students to achieve more in-
depth and comprehensive learning experiences.
For example, a study published in the journal Economics of Education Review
found that longer school days were associated with better academic performance among
high school students in Taiwan. However, a review of the evidence conducted by Richard
Allington and published in Educational Researcher in 1976 found that there was no clear
relationship between school day length and student achievement. A study conducted in
India found that reducing school hours from six to four hours a day did not affect academic
achievement but did improve the mental health and well-being of students. In a report
published by the Education Endowment Foundation in the UK, it was suggested that
extending the school day could be beneficial for students, especially those from
disadvantaged backgrounds. A study conducted in the United States found that extended
school days had a positive impact on academic achievement, especially for low-income
students. The average school hours around the world can vary widely depending on factors
such as the country, the age of the students, and the type of school. In general, primary
schools tend to have shorter hours than secondary schools.
Additionally, some countries have shorter school hours on certain days of the week
or during certain times of the year, such as during holidays or exam periods. Here are some
examples of average school hours in different countries: In the United States, the average
school day for elementary and middle schools is typically around 6-7 hours, while high
schools may have longer hours of 7-8 hours. In Japan, primary school students typically
attend school from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, while middle and high school students attend from
8:30 am to 3:30 pm. In Australia, primary school students typically attend school for 6
hours a day, while secondary school students attend for 6.5-7 hours a day. In the United
Kingdom, primary school students typically attend school for 6 hours a day, while
secondary school students attend for 6-7 hours a day. In China, school hours can vary
widely depending on the region, but in general, primary school students attend for around
6 hours a day, while secondary school students attend for 8 hours a day. It is important to
note that these figures are just averages and can vary widely depending on the specific
school and region within a country.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the education system in the Philippines, with
some schools implementing flexible learning arrangements that include both online and

8 | Page
Republic of the Philippines
Nazareth School of National University
Department of Education
272 Plaza Sta. Teresita St., Sampaloc, Manila, Metro Manila 1008

offline learning. These arrangements may have an impact on the average school hours for
SHS students.
In the Philippines, Senior High School (SHS) students attend school for around 6-
8 hours per day, from Monday to Friday, with additional classes on Saturdays for some
schools. The exact length of the school day may vary depending on the specific school and
region. SHS is a two-year program that was added to the country's basic education system
in 2016, and it is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to
pursue further education or enter the workforce. SHS students are required to complete the
core subjects prescribed by the Department of Education, as well as specialized subjects
depending on their chosen track or strand. The specific subjects and number of hours per
subject may also vary depending on the school and track or strand.
Overall, while there is limited research on the specific topic of 4 hours of school,
there is evidence to suggest that longer school days could be beneficial for students,
especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. However, the specific amount of time
that is optimal may vary depending on factors such as age, grade level, and individual
needs.
