Linear Inequality

For questions 1 ‐ 2, write the inequality and graph it. Each question is worth 2 points.

1.  Your school wants to collect at least 5,000 box tops for a fundraiser.  Write and graph an
inequality to describe the amount of box tops that your school hopes to collect.
X is greater than or equal to 5.000
     Inequality: ______________

2.  The speed limit on a city street is 35 kilometers per hour.  Write and graph an inequality to
describe a car’s possible speed.
s is less than or equal to35
     Inequality: ______________
  32             33             34             35             36             37            38             39             40

Write and solve an inequality to answer each question. Each problem is worth 5 points and
scoring is based on the rubric shown below.

3.  The length of Amy's rectangular kitchen is 12 feet.  If the area of the room is at least 96
square feet, what is the smallest width the room could have?

We know that the area of a rectangule is lenght *width, and we can replace length by 12 and we know
that the area room is at least 96 square feet.
So let width be x
  12*x=96
  12/12*x=96/12
  X=8
Let's check our ansewers
4.  Joe makes $3.50 per hour working at a convenience store. If he gets a bonus of $25 this
12*8=96
week, how many hours must he work to make at least $165?
The smallest witdh the room could have is 8 feet

Joe makes $3.50 per hour + 25 bonous, and he needs to work h hours to make at least $165
Let h be the hours that he must work
So let's set up the equation
  3.50h+25=165
  -25= -25
  3.50/3.50h=140/3.50
h=40
Let's chek our ansewers
3.50(40)+25=165
  140+25=165
So he must work 40 hours to make at least $165

5.  Leanne earned $400 and $550 in interest the last 2 years. How much interest must she earn
this year so that her average earnings over the three year period is more than $600?

Leanne earned $400 +$550 in interest over the last 2 years, what they are asking us us how much
 interest
than $600
will she need to make this year so that the average of earnings over a 3 year perdiod is more

Let y be the interest of leanne that she has to earn this year
550+400+y/3>600
950+y/3>600
*3 =*3
950+y>1.800
-950 >-950
y>850
950+850/3
