The Passive Voice
We use the passive voice in formal writing or when we don´t mention who or what does the action (or it is obvious
or not important).
In the passive voice, we say what happens to the subject of the sentence. We use the active voice to say what the
subject does. In this case, it is the subject who performs the action.
Grammatically speaking, what it is direct object in the active voice, takes the place of the subject in the passive voice.
We form the passive voice with the verb to be (in the correct tense) + the past participle of the verb (3rd column of
irregular verbs and –ed ending of regular verbs). We add by… to mention who or what performs the action.
