From our basic sales experience, we know that customers do not purchase industrial products for fun.
Customers are motivated to purchase when they are solving problems. There are hundred of options
available for GE Fanuc/FANUC controls and it is sometimes difficult to know which options are
available to solve a particular customer problem.
Global competition continues to drive the need for lower cost production, with shorter lead times and
most manufactures are adopting Lean or Just-In-Time practices. The most popular options that we sell
are focused on the areas of Setup Reduction, Cycle Time Reduction, Quality, Connectivity and
Maintenance Management.

Though all these Lean Concepts are important, some are more important than others to different
industries. For example, quality is important to every company, but it is legislated in Aerospace and
Medical. Setup Reduction is an advantage to everyone, but it is critical to the short-run job shop that
often produces very small lot sizes.
Every situation is different and we should avoid generalizations in selling, but the chart above can
help guide you to ask the right questions.

Description

Features/Specs
w w w. g e f a n u c . c o m
GE Fanuc has Data Sheets on many of the popular options that focus on the end-user benefits and
applications. This complements the official documentation which is focused on how to implement and
use the feature.
Knowing your way around the data sheet will enhance communications with the customer and with
the business support systems.
The OPTION NAME identifies the option. The name on the data sheet is not always the same as the
name in the official FANUC manuals. We’ve used the common industry terms or grammatically
improve names to allow the user to clearly identify the feature.
The BENEFITS bullets explain why the option is important to the end-user. These benefit statements
are rarely listed in any other documentation.
The FEATURE section provides information that includes the specifications and sometimes the
limitations of the option.
The OPTION CODE is the most specific way to refer to an option. GO TO NEXT SLIDE

Note that an option name has a different option code depending on which control series is being
referenced. For example, Coordinate System Rotation is option code J893 on the 16, 18 and 21 series
controls, but it is option code J872 on the series 15 of controls, and option code J854 on series 0
controls.

The rest of the data sheet is filled up with more detailed information on how the feature works with
examples.
Each Data Sheet is identified with a REFERENCE number. For example this Data Sheet is GFT-327.
Data Sheets are available in electronic PDF format. The CONTACT INFORMATION at the bottom
of the Data Sheet can be edited using the standard Adobe PDF Reader that is free from the Adobe web
site. GO TO NEXT SLIDE

There are 3 lines of contact information which you can change to anything you want.
You can open the PDF file, edit the data and print it. However, if you want to save your changes (or
to email the changes) you will need the full version of Acrobat, which cost $250 from the Adobe web
site.

Some options are available in the basic software and are a simple turn on. But many other options
require additional software and hardware to be installed. Additional memory is often required for the
more complex options, either to store data or to store the extended CNC Executive software. There
are three type of memory in the typical CNC:
•SRAM – Static RAM for storing customer data such as part programs, offsets and parameters when
the power is turned off
•FROM – Flash ROM where the CNC System Executive is stored when power is turned off
•DRAM – Dynamic RAM where the Executive software stores data and code segments when it is
being executed.
A few options may need PMC ladder development and a few of the more complex options will require
expert installation, either for the Executive System upgrade, or for the tuning process after the option
is installed.

GE Fanuc can install many options with a fixed rate of $450 for a half day or $750 for a full day. Most
options can be installed in half a day, though some of the complex high-speed machining options may
take several days of tuning to ensure maximum benefit. And of course, you get a professional
installation from GE Fanuc, and the customer gets a backup of the total system before we leave.

Some options are really complex and difficult to quote, therefore GE Fanuc has developed some
simple bundled packages to simplify the process. With these economical packages you can quote a
fixed price up front, and we engineer the specific solution when we get the order.

CNC Option Essentials

To quote most options, we have to know the current configuration of the CNC. This will determine if
any additional software or hardware is required. The best information is available on the Data Sheets
that are typically kept with the machine tool.
11
CNC Option Essentials
w w w. g e f a n u c . c o m
The Data Sheets describe the CNC configuration when it left the FANUC factory. The data sheets
may not reflect the final configuration if the control was updated by the machine tool builder, machine
tool distributor or the end-user, but it is still the best reference.
The Data Sheet includes the Special Setting Parameters and the hardware configuration. You can look
at the NAME and SPECIFICATION columns of the configuration data sheets to see if a machine has
a particular option already.

Example
A02B-0239-J893 – Coordinate System Rotation for 18i-MA
w w w. g e f a n u c . c o m
The last four digits of a part number in the SPECIFICATIONS column will be the Option Code on the
Data Sheets if an option is present. For example, you would look for J893 for Coordinate System
Rotation on a 16, 18 or 21 series control. The middle four digits for the software options in fact will
identify the control series. For example, 0228 identifies an 18-TC.
Learning to read the Configuration Data Sheets will allow you to spot opportunities for performance
options.

If the Data Sheets are not available, you can get most of the important information right off the CNC
display.
Pressing the SYSTEM pushbutton on the MDI panel and then the SYSTEM softkey on the Display
panel will display the system information.

Many important options are included in these option Assemblies. At least write down all the
information on the first few lines.
