THE IMPACT OF SLEEPING BEHAVIOR ON THE ABM STUDENTS OF

PANTALAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Introduction
The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the physical and mental health of the world
population. Although COVID-19 offers more health risks for middle-aged and older adults,
younger people have been are affected as well. Fear of the spread of the virus, social distancing,
and negative economic impact has significantly affected adolescents. Despite the return of
commercial activity in places where lockdown was adopted, in many cities, schools remain
closed. The mode of learning of every student is either an online class or modular learning.
Students were not prepared for this new normal of education which affects drastically their
health-related quality of life of adults and adolescents such as increased stress, anxiety, fear,
worry on their health, decreased social interactions, and disruptive sleeping patterns.
Everyone needs sleep in their lives. Without enough sleep, the brain of an individual will not
function properly. Sleep is an important function for recharging the body and mind of an
individual, can make feel refresh and alive. Healthy sleep also helps the body stay healthy and
fight illness. According to shbonweb.com, sleep is a basic human physiological need and an
important physiological basis for human beings to maintain health. The amount of sleep someone
needs each night depends on their age. Children and young adults need more sleep than older
people. Typical college freshmen should sleep 7-9 hours a night. Uninterrupted sleep promotes
the sleep cycle, during which the brain moves through active and inactive states. Learners' sleep
schedules also affect sleep quality. Going to sleep and waking up at the same time each day
promotes better rest.
Furthermore, sleep and memory share a complex relationship. Getting enough rest helps a
person process new information. Once they wake up and sleep after learning can consolidate this
information into memories, allowing you to store them in your brain.
Having a disruptive sleeping pattern can affect you in different aspects. One of the most
affected aspects is the education of the students. With the sudden change of learning style, many
students couldn’t cope up which lead them to experience overthinking and affected their sleeping
behavior and their academic performance. Due to a multitude of intrinsic and environmental
factors, high-school students are particularly vulnerable to sleep problems. Intrinsic factors
including gender and being female may result in shorter sleep durations than males due to
individual health status, for example, headaches.
For these reasons, the researchers ended up conducting this research to know what are the
effects of sleeping behavior of ABM Students of Pantalan Senior High School in their Academic
Performance and for the awareness of everyone for this certain problem in this time of Pandemic.
