Assessment Task No. 5

Reflective Essay

A. Directions: Write a five-sentence paragraph reflective essay about the following

questions. Your answer should be as well organized and as carefully written as you
can make it.

Kindly refer to the Reflection Paper Rubric in the succeeding page for you to know
and understand what the instructor’s expectation for the essay is and how you will
be graded.

1. Does art always have a function?

Yes, functions of an art form depend on its context and usually vary based on
how they have been perceived by the one viewing them. Taking anything out of
context can lead to misunderstanding art and misinterpreting an artist’s
intentions. The functions of art normally fall into three categories: physical, social
and personal. The functions of art apply not only the artist that created a piece
but also for the viewers. The whole experience and understanding of a piece
should contribute to the functions assign to it, as well as everything to know
about its context.

2. If artwork did not have any function, will it remain art?

In my opinion, art serves many different functions, purposes, motivations, intentions and
inspiration behind it are endless. If it did not have functions, maybe it would not be an
artwork. Art fulfills an expressive function when an artist conveys information about his/her
personality, feelings or worldview. If an artwork serves no functions, it does not necessarily
mean it is not art anymore, it just falls in the other form of art. Having said, an artwork
ceased to have a function, remains an art.
