PICHINCHA`S

BATTLE

13 MARCH

1
The Battle of Pichincha took place on 24 May 1822 at the foothills of the Pichincha
volcano, more than 3000 meters above sea level, near the city
of Quito. The meeting, which took place in the context of the Spanish-American wars
of independence, pitted the independence army under the command of Venezuelan
Marshal Antonio José de Sucre and the royalist army commanded by Commander
Melchor Aymerich. The defeat of the Spanish forces led to the liberation of Quito
and ensured the independence of the provinces that belonged to the Royal
Audience of Quito, also known as the Presidency of Quito, the Spanish colonial
administrative jurisdiction from which the provinces we now know as the Republic of
Ecuador finally emerged. The main protagonists include Antonio José de Sucre,
Melchor Aymerich and Simón Bolívar.
