GEOCELLS vs. MATTRESSES IN HYDRAULIC APPLICATIONS

1. INTRODUCTION
Geocells are 3-D honeycomb structures
featuring a unique confinement system formed
by a series of self-containing cells. Depending on
the infill material, geocells are applied for
channel linings and bank protections in a wide
range of hydraulic loadings (in terms of water
velocities or shear stresses): suppliers claim that
the geocells can withstand very high loads,
however the designer must consider the real
behavior of the system which is strongly
dependent on the actual vegetation growth

2. BASIC HYDRAULIC CONCEPTS

The basic theory behind the function of geocells is that cohesionless materials gain considerable shear
strength under sufficient confinement, however the hydraulic design engineer shall always refer to 2
different situations:

· END OF INSTALLATION: the material or technique used as a bank protection system presents the
lowest allowable water velocity (or tractive forces) and Manning’ roughness value

· VEGETATION COMPLETELY GROWN: after some years (usually a minimum 3-year period is
required after the end of installation) the vegetation growth consolidates the system which increases
its resistance to erosion and its roughness coefficient. The situation with vegetation completely grown
becomes the most critical in terms of capability of the river cross-section to contain the design flow.
