Topic: Chapter 13 – Fun With Magnets

Learning Facilitator: Ms. Induja Alliraj

I. Fill in the blanks.

1. Nickel and cobalt are examples of __magnetic materials___.

2. Iron filings are attracted more towards the __poles___.
3. When a magnet is suspended, it always comes to rest in the __North – South __direction.
4. Similar poles of two magnets __repel__ one another.
5. __Magnets___ always exists in pairs.
6. Stickers with pieces of magnet inside them easily stick to _iron__ surfaces like the doors
of refrigerator.
7. __Mariner’s Compass___ is a device used by pilots and navigators to find directions.
8. __Repulsion___ is the surest test for magnetism.
9. Computers and cassettes get __demagnetised__when a powerful magnet is kept close to
them.
10. A piece of __iron__ is kept at the poles of a horse-shoe magnet to prevent it from getting
weak.

II Answer the following questions.

1. Classify the following as magnetic and non-magnetic material:
Lodestone, plastic, rubber, glass, mirror, steel
Magnetic; lodestone , steel Non- Magnetic: plastics, rubber,
glass, mirror
2. Write three main properties of a magnet.
i) A magnet has two poles – North and South pole. Poles of a magnet cannot be isolated.
ii) It always aligns itself in the north – south direction when freely suspended. .
iii) Like poles repel and unlike poles attract.

3. A given bar magnet was broken into pieces. Where will its North and South pole be?
The north of the broken piece will be its north pole and the opposite end will be its south.
Similarly, the other piece will have its south as the south pole while the other end will be its
north.

4. A tailor was stitching buttons on his shirt. The needle slipped from his hand onto the floor.
Can you help the tailor to find the needle?
The needle can be found by using a magnet. As the needle is a magnetic material, it will
stick to magnet when it is wavered around.

5. Why does a bar magnet always point in north-south directions?

A freely suspended magnet always rest in north – south direction because the north pole of
the magnet lies in the geographic north direction and the south pole of the magnet lies in the
geographic south direction.

6. How would you store two bar magnets?

Bar magnets should be kept in pairs with their unlike poles on the same side. They must be
separated by a piece of wood while a soft iron should be kept across the ends.
For horse – shoe magnet, a piece of iron should be kept across the poles.

7. You are given a piece of iron bar. How will you magnetize the bar? Explain with the help
of a diagram.
Take a rectangular piece of iron bar.
Take a bar magnet and keep in contact with one of its poles with one edge of the bar of iron.
Without lifting the bar magnet, move it along the length of the iron bar till you reach the
other end.
Lift the magnet and bring the pole (the same pole you started with) to the same point as the
iron bar from which you began
Move the magnet again along the iron bar in the same direction as you did before. Repeat
this process about 30-40 times.
Bring a few pins near the iron bar and check if it is converted to a magnet or not.

8. Bhawana witnessed an interesting game at the fair. A duck was floating in a tub. When a
plate containing some grains of rice was brought close to the duck, the duck moved towards
the plate. But, when a plate containing some pebbles was brought close to the duck, it
moved away from the plate.
Observe the diagram and answer the questions that follow.

a) Why does the duck move close to the grains of rice and away from the pebbles?
The magnet is fitted in such a way that its north-pole points towards rice grains, while
south-pole indicates towards pebbles. A magnet is also fitted in the bottom of the duck,
where south-pole points towards mouth and north-pole towards tail of the duck.
When the rice portion of the plate is brought closer to the duck, the duck moves towards
rice grains because the poles are unlike. When the pebbles was brought the poles are like so
the duck moves away.
b) What inference would you draw from the above example?
Unlike poles attract each other and like poles repel.

9. The figure shows a ring magnet X, floating above another ring magnet Y. What could be
the reason for the magnet X to float?

In the above figure, X floats over Y because both have similar poles facing each other and
so they repel one another.
10. Arpita is standing in the middle of the crossroad with a compass. The red portion of the
compass needle is pointing toward her. She wants to go towards the east. In which way
should she turn?
Arpita should turn to her right.
