    Piaget proposed that children progress through four stages of cognitive development: sensorimotor stage (birth to age 2) where children learn through senses and motor skills without use of symbols; preoperational stage (age 2 to 7) where children think intuitively without logic; concrete operational stage (age 7 to 11) where children can think logically about concrete events; and formal operational stage (age 11 and up) where children can think logically about abstract propositions and test hypotheses systematically. According to Piaget, children construct knowledge through interaction with their environment using cognitive schemas which they modify through assimilation and accommodation as they progress through the stages of cognitive development.
