Types of Sewing
Lesson 1
Machine and Its Parts
Sewing machines come in different types. The kind of sewing machines served
what is intended for its purpose. The familiarity with its parts will help you determine
the problem in the machine, especially if it does not serve the dressmaker’s needs well.
It will help you to determine what part needs to be replaced if they fail to operate
normally.

What’s In

Do you still recall the sewing tools, it’s uses, and classification? It is really
importance to study? Why? Aside from the sewing tools, what do you think is needed
to make sewing easier and faster especially when you want to repair some worn-out
clothes, you want to create a cover for your table?

Notes to the Teacher

In this lesson, the learners are expected to choose and use
appropriate sewing machines needed for what he needs.

What’s New
Are you familiar with the different types of sewing machine? Have you seen
those types and what its function? Did you know that the different stitches that we
seen on our clothes are the output of the different type of sewing machines?

Being familiar with the kind of sewing machines you need, will help you to
know the best that will bring to what you need in the task to perform. Proper care of
the sewing machine makes work easier and faster. It will eliminate wasting of time,
energy, money in doing the sewing activity.

What is It
In this part you will acquire the knowledge in understanding the types of
sewing machine and its function.

A sewing machine is a unique designed machine that is used for stitching

different parts of fabric together to make garment products. It is a mechanically
driven needle used to stitch materials together with thread. It is necessary to know
what sewing machine will be used for a specific job to make better results, without
wasting time and effort in the performance of tasks.

TYPES OF SEWING MACHINE

1. Lockstitch Sewing Machine. This is usually

used in homes and sometimes in school.
This is also called “Domestic Sewing
Machine”. It is run by foot and may also be
converted to electric power machine.
Lockstitch means “single needle stitching”
often found on dress shirt labels.

2. Hi-Speed Lockstitch Sewing Machine. This

is sometimes called “straight stitching
machine” or industrial sewing machine. It
can produce massive production because of
its speed capacity. It has an automatic
lubrication and used mostly by dressmakers
and tailors.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
3. Over Edging Machine. The “small machine”
that finishes the raw edges of the pattern for
construction. The advantage of using this
machine will make two layers of cloth and
trimming the edge of the fabric to stop from
fraying.

4. Embroidery Machine. This is used in

making fancy stitches and in making
different kinds of embroidery stitches on
fabrics. There are also embroidery machine
that are programmed in the computer
memory.

5. Button Holer Machine. This is used in

making buttonholes on garments. Using
this kind of sewing machine will provide
reliable results because the side of the
buttonhole sew the same direction to
prevent gaps in stitching or fabric distortion.

6. Button Attachment Machine. This is used in

attaching buttons to the garments. This will
make the work easier and faster.

7. Double Needle Machine. This is used in the
construction of the different kinds of
clothing especially for the inseam, out seam
and side seam. It also produces design to
the seam. This is used for creating a
decorative stitches and cover stitch hem
found on T-shirt hems.

8. Bar tacking Machine. This type is usually

used for reinforcing the opening and closing
of the pockets. It makes the sewn products
stronger and resistant to tears or rips in the
seam.

Two Major Parts of the Lockstitch Sewing Machine

I. The Upper Part is composed of:

1. Head is the complete sewing machine

without a cabinet or stand.
2. Arm is the curve part of the head
containing mechanism for operating the
needle.
3. Bed is the flat portion of the machine
and beneath is the feed dog where it is
mounted, and the shuttle and lower
thread are placed.

Parts of the Sewing Machine in the Arm

1. Spool Pin is the thread holder.

2. Thread Guide keeps the thread in position
3. Thread Take up Lever releases the thread and interlocks with the bobbin thread.
4. Presser bar lifter moves the presser foot.
5. Tension controls the looseness and tightness of stitches.
6. Needle Bar holds the needle in place.
7. Needle Clamp holds and tightens the needle.
8. Presser Foot holds the fabric in place while sewing.
9. Needle is a slender tool attached in the needle clamp used for sewing.
10. Bobbin Winder controls the bobbin while winding thread.
11. Stitch regulator checks the length of the stitches.
12. Balance Wheel sets the mechanism in motion.
13. Belt connects the balance wheel to the drive wheel.
14. Stop Motion Screw hinders moving when loosened and starts.

Parts of Sewing Machine under the Bed

1. Feed dog moves the fabric while
sewing.
2. Throat plate is the windows of the
feed dog and it is where the bobbin
threads come out.
3. Slide plate is a movable plate that
covers the shuttle and bobbin
case.
4. Shuttle holds the bobbin case
while sewing.
5. Bobbin is a metal spool for
winding thread.
6. Bobbin case holds the bobbin.

The Lower Parts of the Lock Stitch Sewing Machine
The lower parts of the sewing machine are the cabinet and the stand. The
cabinet has drawers and screws on the hinges for the attachment of the head. The
following are the lower parts of the sewing machine and their uses:

1. Band Wheel leads the balance wheel through the belt connection.
2. Band Wheel Crank moves the band wheel.
3. Pitman Rod holds the treadle to band wheel crank.
4. Belt Guide holds the belt to its place.
5. Belt Shifter removes the belt from the wheel.
6. Dress Guard protects the dress from the wheel.
7. Treadle is where the feet are stationed to drive the band wheel through the
pitman rod.
8. Legs support the cabinet of the machine.
9. Cabinet holds the head of the machine by interlocking screw on the hinges.
