BoostLi Energy Storage Module ESM-48100U2

User Manual 1 Product Description

1  Product Description

1.1 Product Overview

Overview
The ESM is an energy storage unit composed of lithium batteries. It features better
charge and discharge performance, longer service life, and less self-discharge loss

than ordinary batteries.

An ESM consists of electrochemical cells, an energy storage management unit
(ESMU), power and signal terminals, and mechanical parts. It can be used as an
independent 48 V unit, supports the mixed use of old and new batteries as well as
lithium and lead-acid batteries, and can
c an collaborate with third-party power
systems.

1.2 Application Scenario

The ESM provides backup power for a power system. It can be used alone or used
with lead-acid batteries to back up power.
power.
Inside an ESM, an energy storage management unit (ESMU) monitors the status
of temperature, current, and voltage, provides protection against overvoltage,
undervoltage, overcurrent, short circuit,
ci rcuit, overtemperature, and undertemperature,
and reports the ESM running status and alarm information through a
communications port that supports both the CAN and RS485 protocol.

2.2 Online Expansion

In the maintenance mode of the ESM, the system capacity or power can be
expanded without disconnecting the battery supply so that the site will not break
down in case of a mains power failure during capacity expansion.

The ESM can be used in class A or B environments with direct ventilation but
cannot be used separately in class C or D environments. If the ESM needs to be
used in class C or D environments, cabinets with air conditioners and a high IP
rating (IP55 or higher) must be deployed.

NO TI E

If the Huawei power monitoring module is connected to the ESM for the rst
time, the monitoring module will restart automatically as battery management
parameters need to be switched to the ESM.

Step 2 When multiple ESMs connected in parallel are powered on, observe the RUN
indicator on each ESM panel. Communication is normal if the indicator is steady
on and is not established if it blinks at short intervals. Check the communications
cables between ESMs and rectify the fault.

Step 3 When the ESMs are communicating with the monitoring module, check whether
the communication is normal. If the RUN indicator on an ESM is steady on, the
ESM communicates properly with the monitoring module. If the indicator is
blinking at short intervals, the communication is interrupted. In this case, check
that the communications cable is i s properly connected.

Step 4 Observe the ESMs for 15 minutes. Ensure that they are working properly (the ALM
indicator is of  and
and the RUN indicator is steady on).

Reverse If terminals are connected with reverse polarity, the ESM will

MANUAL ON/OFF button to activate the ESM, it will report a
protection alarm and the ALM indicator will be lit.

External short If the ESM loop is short-circuited, ESM protection will be

circuit triggered and the ESM cannot be charged or discharged.
Long-time frequent short circuiting can result in cell or board
faults, which may cause risks such as re.

Series ESMs cannot be connected in series. If ESMs are connected

connection in series forcibly, ESM protection will be triggered.
Operations outside the protection range will result in board
or battery damage and battery protection failure, which may
cause risks such as re.

Gas Composition

The ESM is an enclosed battery system and will not release any gases under
normal operations.

If the ESM is severely misused, for example, being burned or thunderstruck, the
ESM may be damaged, resulting in electrolyte
elec trolyte leakage. Because the electrolyte is
of organic carbonate nature, it may produce CO 2, CO, and N2 after being burned.
