2 Application Description

2.1 Parallel Connection

ESMs can be connected in parallel to increase the backup time or power.

The backup power of a single ESM is 2.2 kW. Maximum power (P) of N ESMs connected in
parallel = min (2.2 kW x N, 15 kW), 2 ≤ N ≤ 32.

2.2 Online Expansion

The system capacity or power can be expanded online without disconnecting the battery
supply so that the site will not break down in case of a mains power failure during expansion.

2.3 Application in Class B Environments with Direct

Ventilation
The ESM can be used in class A or B environments with direct ventilation but cannot be
separately used in class C or D environments. If there is a need to use it in a class C or D

environment, deploy an air conditioner-controlled cabinet with the protection rating of at least
IP55.
Environments subject to atmospheric corrosion can be classified into four categories:
 Class A environment (controlled environment): refer to indoor environments where the
ambient temperature and humidity are controlled (including rooms where people live)
and the relative humidity of air is controlled below 65%.
 Class B environment (uncontrolled environment): refer to indoor environments where
the ambient temperature and humidity are not controlled or outdoor environments (with
simple shielding measures) where the humidity can reach 100%.
 Class C environment (harsh environment): refer to outdoor land environments (with
simple shielding measures) near seas or pollution sources. If a site is near a sea, it is
0.5–3.7 km away from the sea. If a site is near a pollution source, it is at most 3.7 km
away from salt lakes, 3 km away from heavy pollution sources such as smelteries, coal
mines, and thermal power plants, 2 km away from medium pollution sources such as
chemical, rubber, and galvanization industries, or 1 km away from light pollution sources
such as packing houses, tanneries, and boiler rooms.
 Class D environment (sea environment): refer to outdoor land environments (with simple
shielding measures) at most 500 m away from the seashore or environments on the sea.

2.4 Low-Temperature Application

 Low-temperature charging: The ESM does not support battery charging at a temperature
below 0°C. When the battery temperature is below 0°C, the ESM will shut down the
charging loop to disable charging.
When the ESM is used in an environment below 0°C, a heater needs to be added in the
cabinet, and batteries can be charged after the battery temperature rises to 0°C or above.
 Low-temperature discharging: The ESM does not support battery discharging at a
temperature below –20°C. When the battery temperature is below –20°C, the ESM will
shut down the discharging loop to disable discharging.
When the ESM is used in an environment below –20°C, a heater needs to be added in the
cabinet, and batteries can be discharged after the battery temperature rises to –20°C or
above.

2.5 Storage with Low SOC (≤ 5%)

The ESM has ESMU static power consumption and self-discharge loss after power-off. In
actual application scenarios, avoid storing an ESM with low SOC (≤ 5%). If unavoidable,
limit the storage duration to 30 days at 25°C or 15 days at 45°C. Promptly recharge the ESM
after the storage. Otherwise, the ESM may be damaged due to overdischarge, which requires
replacing the ESM.
The following situations may cause storage of ESMs in discharge state:
1. After the site power supply is disconnected due to a mains outage, the power supply is
not recovered for a long time because the faults (such as cable faults) cannot be rectified
in a timely manner.

BoostLi Energy Storage Module ESM-4875A1
User Manual 2 Application Description

2. After installation and commissioning are complete, the mains power is switched off
directly without powering off the ESM. The ESM can enter the low power mode only
after being completely discharged, and the interval for onsite acceptance check is long.
3. Other reasons result in that the ESM cannot enter the low power mode normally.

 Performing the power-on procedure provided in this section may result in power failure or
alarms. Inform the alarm center before and after the procedure.
 The power-on procedure involves various technologies and should be performed by
trained personnel according to the power-on instructions.
 During operations, stand on dry insulating material and do not wear any conductors such
as jewelry or watches. Use insulated tools during power-on.
 Do not establish contact between electrical points that have different electric currents.
 When you are performing operations and do not want others to operate, attach the label
"Currently being serviced. Do not switch on." to the power distribution equipment.
 During the power-on procedure, shut down the system immediately if any fault is detected.
Rectify the fault and proceed with the procedure.

Step 1 Switch on the battery circuit breakers and the circuit breaker connected to activation cables in
the power system.

If the Huawei power monitoring module is connected to the ESM for the first time, the
monitoring module will restart automatically as battery management parameters need to be
switched to the ESM.

Step 2 If multiple ESMs connected in parallel are powered on, observe the RUN indicator on each
ESM panel. Communication is normal if the indicator is steady on and is not established if it
blinks at short intervals. Check the communications cables between ESMs and rectify the
fault.
Step 3 When the ESMs are communicating with the monitoring module, check whether the
communication is normal. If the RUN indicator on an ESM is steady on, the ESM
communicates properly with the monitoring module. If the indicator is blinking at short
intervals (4 Hz), the communication is interrupted. In this case, check that the
communications cable is properly connected.
Step 4 Observe the ESMs for 15 minutes. Ensure that they are working properly (the ALM indicator
is off and the RUN indicator is steady on).

6 Safety Precautions

6.1 Safety Precautions

 Avoid skin contact with electrolyte overflow. Before installing or maintaining batteries,
wear goggles, rubber gloves, and protective clothing.
 Keep the ESM loop disconnected during installation and maintenance.
 Secure ESM cables to the torque specified in the ESM documentation. Loose
connections will result in excessive voltage drops or cause ESMs to burn out when the
current increases.
 Protect your skin and eyes from ESM electrolyte leakage. If your body comes in contact
with electrolyte leakage, wash with clean water immediately and visit a doctor if the
situation is serious.
 Avoid ingestion of ESM components.
 Protect the ESMs from mechanical vibration, collision, punctures, and strong impact.
Otherwise, the ESM may catch fire.
 Do not throw ESMs in fire because this may cause the ESMs to ignite.
 Do not immerse ESMs in water or expose them to rain.
 There is a risk of explosion if an ESM is replaced with an incorrect model.
 Short circuits inside an ESM or on the ESM loop must be prevented to avoid fire and
personal injury.
 An ESM communication failure alarm caused by reasons such as loose communications
cable connection should be handled within 72 hours (default value, configurable in the
range of 8 to 720 hours). Otherwise, the ESM will be internally locked, which may affect
the ESM power backup.
 Dispose of waste ESMs in strict accordance with local laws and regulations.

6.2 Misoperations
The following lists some misoperations that should be avoided.

Misoperations Protection Description

activate the ESM, it will report a protection alarm
and the ALM indicator will be lit.
External short circuit The fuse may be blown.
Series connection The ESMs cannot be connected in series. If the
series connection is used forcibly, the ESMs may
be damaged and even smoke, fire, and explosion
may occur.

6.3 Gas Composition

The ESM is an enclosed battery system and will not release any gases under normal
operations.
If the ESM is severely misused, for example, being burned or thunderstruck, the ESM may be
damaged, resulting in electrolyte leakage. Because the electrolyte is of organic carbonate
nature, it may produce CO2, CO, and N2 after being burned.
