INFRARED
RADIATION
INFRARED emit visible light; however, you will feel the infrared heat
that it generates.
RADIATION
Humans can feel this type of radiation, from sunlight, fire,
a radiator or warm sand. Although humans cannot see
infrared light, a rattlesnake can detect infrared light.
There are three types of infrared light, near, mid and far.
Near infrared light is microscopic. Asteroids radiate most
of their infrared light in the mid infrared spectrum.
According to NASA, far infrared light is thermal.
DISCOVERY
Around 1800, the German-born British-astronomer
William Herschel discovered infrared radiation. He
did so with a simple experiment in which he dispersed
sunlight through a prism and placed a thermometer at
the location of each colour. He noticed that the
thermometer temperature increased when he did
this, which was not really unexpected since sunlight
carries warmth. However when he placed the
thermometer past the red end of the spectrum –
where there was no visible sunlight – the
thermometer’s temperature still increased! Herschel
had discovered infrared radiation – radiation beyond
the red end of the visible spectrum.
THE WAVELENGTH OF INFRARED RADIATION
CATEGORIZES UNDER 3 SPECIFIC SPECTRAL RANGE.
THEY ARE:
1. 1µm to 3µm – known as Short Wave
Infrared radiation
2. 3µm to 5µm – Known as Middle Wave
Infrared Radiation
3. 8µm to 14µm – Known as Long Wave

CHARACTERISTICS OF INFRARED RADIATION
Infrared radiation consists of heat-inducing property. These rays
have applications in the area of heat production. We can use it for
therapeutic purposes in physical therapy.
The origin is from an alteration in electron movement.
Wavelength range from 710 nm to 1 mm.
Frequency range from 430 THz to 300 GHz.
Infrared radiation is a Transverse wave.
Speed is 3X 108 m/s.
It shows the property of refraction.
Thermal properties: Exhibiting heat-inducing property.
