Problem Set 1

Machine Design II
Present with complete solution, box your final answers.
1. A 76 mm bearing is using oil with an absolute viscosity of 0.70 poise running at 500 rpm
gives satisfactory operation with a bearing pressure of 14 kg/cm2. The bearing
clearance is 0.127 mm. Determine the unit pressure at which the bearing should operate
at if the speed is changed to 600 rpm. Yes
16.8 kg/cm2
2. A Journal bearing with 0.05 m diameter and 0.1 m long has a bearing pressure of 1.4
MPa. Journal speed is at 900 rpm and the ration of journal diametral clearance is 1000.
The bearing is lubricated with oil, whose absolute viscosity is 0.011 kg/m-s at 75 deg. C.
The room temp is 35 deg C. find (a) the amount of artificial cooling required. (b) the
mass of lubricating oil required, if the difference between the outlet and inlet temp of oil
is 10 deg C. Specific heat of oil is 1850 KJ/Kg/ °C. Heat dissipation value is C=300
Qdissipated = CA (tb-ta) ; (tb-ta)=1/2 (to-ta)
41.53 W, 3.86x10-3 kg/s

3. A 75 mm full journal bearing of 75mm diameter supports a radial load of 12 kN at a shaft speed
of 1800 rpm. Assure ratio of diameter to diametral clearance is 1000. The viscosity of oil is 0.01
pas at 60 deg. C. determine the ff: (a) Sommerfield number (b) f by Mckee’s Equation (c) Qg
f = Ka ( ZN/p) (r/c) 10 + k ; Ka = 0.195x 106 for a full bearing
-10
