3 – Slender Column Design
(a) Moment diagrams. – The moment about the y‐y axis at the top of the pier is 2550 kNm, and not
zero as wrongly assumed by some students.
(b) Dimension associated with bending. – Some students were confused with the use of the
dimensions, b (section width) and h (section height), which are generally taken to be parallel and
perpendicular, respectively, to the axis of bending.
(c) Conditions for not requiring further check for bi‐axial bending. – Only one of the following two
criteria needs to be satisfied: (i) (ez/h)/(ey/b) 0.2; or (ii) (ey/b)/(ez/h) 0.2; where ez = MEdy/NEd and
ey = MEdz/NEd. It should be noted that MEdy and MEdz are taken perpendicular to the dimensions h and
b, respectively. Hence, ez and h are measured in the same direction; and likewise, ey and b.
