CE5510QA Advanced Structural Concrete Design

AY2022/2023 Mini Semester 1A Senior Lecturer Dr. Kong Kian Hau (CEE,NUS)
(Project Term Paper) (CA=25%)
Issue Date: 23-8-22 Submission via LumiNUS: 29-9-22 2359 (or earlier)
It is important to learn and apply the basic design skills of conducting a manual local and global preliminary analysis ,
design using Eurocode & structural key plan sketch of a 5 story Office Building using Structural Concrete.

In groups of 3 students, submit about 15 pages of Design Report of the following Structural Design with Design Brief
addressing Sections 1 & 2 (excluding the detail calculations & reference list). All preliminary design calculations
need to be via Manual or Excel spread sheet (with formulas revealed). All sketch is to be done using graph paper
manually & calculations can be submitted using clear hand writing. Write in the front page of the report your Group
name, student name, matriculation no. and fill up the table. Student have the option to discuss openly or in private
before individual submission via LumiNUS

6. The site is flat and is located near the coastal sea.
7. The basic wind speed is 46 m/s based on a 3 second gust; the equivalent mean hourly wind speed is 23 m/s based on Eurocode EC1-4
8. As building height is around 20 m, no need to design for any low seismic loading to BC3 guide (or SS NA to EC8)
9. Ground conditions: The site is an area of reclaimed land adjacent to a tidal river estuary. 2 BHs reveal that the ground consists of a
compacted layer of crushed rock and clay fill which was installed on a geotextile membrane laid over the original ground and is prone to
settlement, hence the client has decided to accepted RC bored pile foundation with RC pilecap.
(catering for the load where needed)

10. Design of masonry & metal claddings, glazing, metal roof and structural steel support for roof

1 Structural Concrete viable

(8.5 %)
Given imposed/live loadings: Roof = 1.5 kPa, all Floors = 2 kPa.
superimposed dead load (for partitions, finishes, M&E services & false ceiling) = 1 + 1.2 + 0.5 = 2.7 kPa
typical metal cladding / glazing cladding dead load (surface area elevation) = 1.5 kN/m2
Consider most critical & representative the load cases and loading combinations for SLS and ULS

excluding (8.5 %)

(8 %)
Note:
for Section 2 (c). Principal structural element include Structural Concrete: Beam, Slab, Column & Wall (where needed)
