Disaster preparedness is important in each facility, not only in health sector but also for other institution
and houses. Preparation should not only be done by health workers but also individual in case of emergency.
Just like in the video, the said institution prepares for the upcoming storm, they check the facility, emergency
exit doors, power generator, including food and medicine supply. The preparation is not only intended for
emergency situation but also for little problems that may arise such as storing needs for their hygiene. The
health workers also give a heads-up preparation for their family while they’re not around with them.
During the catastrophic event, health worker are alert and responded to an emergent situation that
might hurt their patient, just like when the glass of the window broke due to the strong storm. The facilities
are also prepared for stranded staffs when they cannot go home even after their shifts, they provide and extra
room for their staffs to give them rest. In such crisis, the safety of patients is not the only priority, it also
includes the health workers, services provider, facility worker and other staffs of that institution.
Even the storm is gone, the work of nurses is not done, it is important to initiate the recovery phase
allowing the individual to move forward and get back to their usual activities. From the video I have watched,
the crisis was the increased environmental temperature due to lack of electrical powers that is used in their
cooling system. Continuous warm environment put the patient especially older population at risk in
hyperthermic body temperature and other complications. At first, the staffs first tried to manage the situation
with their resources. However, soon they decided to evacuate their patients to ensure safety and prevent
complications. In my opinion, these three steps, Preparation, Respond, Recovery should be adapted by each
individual people around the world not only in hospital facilities, people should know how to prepare, respond,
and recover so that the health workers can only focus to those victims with fatal injury or losses.
