Polite Expressions and
7 Courteous Greetings

When we talk to people, we should show respect and leave a good impression.
That is a sign of being a good person.

That is also why we use courteous expressions. Courteous means having or

showing good manners and being polite.

Filipinos are known for being polite as they used po and opo when speaking
with someone older.

There are many expressions that we can use to show that we are courteous
and respectful.

What’s In
Look at the illustrations on the right side. What should you say on the following
situations? Choose from the options below.

1. You want to walk in between two

older people talking?

2
2. You accidentally hit the food of an
elderly next to you?

3. You see a person having difficulty

crossing the street?

4. You received a present from your

family?

5. You see a friend passing by in the

morning?

3
Notes to the Teacher
This module prepares pupils on how and when to use polite
greetings as read on a story or illustrated in a photo.

What’s New

Are you polite? Do you want to meet kids like you who are polite? Let us read
their story and know them more.

“Polite Twins”

Everybody likes Rica and Rico. They greet everyone with a warm, cheeky smile.

They greet the school guard, “Good Morning!”

They greet the principal, “Good Afternoon!” when they see him walking
around.

And when classes are over, they bid “Goodbye” to each and every one.

4
At night, they greet their parents, “Good Evening!” and kiss them on the cheek.

They hug their siblings and say, “Good Night!” before they go to sleep and rest.

Everyone likes Rica and Rico because they are polite.

What is It

Answer the following questions about the story "Polite Twins". Write your
answer on your paper.

1. Who are the characters in the story?

2. What did the twins say when they see the guard?

3. What did the twins say when they see the principal?

4. What did the twins say when they come home and see their parents?

5. What did the twins say to their siblings before they go to sleep and rest?

6. Why does everyone like Rico and Rica?

Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Goodbye, Good Evening and Goodnight as

It is important for children like you to know when and where to use polite
greetings. By setting a good example, you will be able to do so.

In the above story, it shows the proper use of common expressions and polite
greetings. When talking to someone, be it a friend, a family member, a
teacher, or elderlies, it is proper to use courteous expressions.

5
Here are some of the words or phrases commonly used in a day to day
conversation with someone.

Greetings

o If we want to greet anyone in the morning, we say “Good Morning!”

o If it’s afternoon, we say “Good Afternoon!”
o When the sun has set and the stars and the moon are up, we greet by
saying “Good Evening!”
o When answering the telephone, we say “Hello!”

Leave – takings

There are also courteous words to say when you are about to leave or rest in

o Before we leave, we say “Goodbye!”, “See you / See you soon!” or “So
Long!”
o Before we sleep, the words to say are “Good Night!” or “Have a good
night’s sleep!”

Expressing gratitude and apology

o Also, to show gratitude we say, “Thank you!”, “Thank you very much” or
“Thanks” and the courteous answer to that is "You are welcome!”
o You say “Sorry” or “I’m sorry” or “I don’t intend to” as a way of
apologizing to someone for something that you have done, be it
accidental or not, which caused them to be upset, mad, sad or caused
them trouble or difficulties.

6
Asking permission

o When we are asking someone for a favor, the magic word to use is
“Please”.
o “May I …”, “Could I …”, “Can I …”, and “Shall I …” are some words to use
to ask permission to do something you want to do.
