The Comparison

For our project we interviewed 2 families, The Khan/Patel Family consisting of Roshnak,
Sameera and Atiya & The Gala Family, consisting of Hemchand, Vicky and Bhavya. We will
also be comparing the answers of our corresponding team in Europe to our answersas well.

The First generation that has Roshnak and Hemchand being 84 yrs and 77 yrs respectively
didn’t have any historical events which were the same, Roshnak talked about the Partition of
India, with a personal anecdote of how her father lost his job because of it and Hemchand talked
about the wars India has taken part in with Pakistanand China including the war for freedom of
Bangladesh.
As for the media used and how much, both parties talked about the fact that they usedmedia
such as newspapers, magazines and the radio (The All India Radio). However, they also
mentioned that out of these 3 sources they used newspapers the most (Roshnak even credited it
to her father)
As for the price of media, evidently it was very cheap, though Roshnak couldn’t remember
the price as she didn’t pay for the media herself, Hemchand recalled that newspapers used to
cost around 10-15 paisa and in order to have a radio you had tohave a license. The fee for this
license was about 2Rs Annually.
Roshnak and Hemchand both talked about the entry of TV’s when they were teenagers(1975) and
how there was only one NewsChannel, Door darshan which was run by the state. Hemchand even
shared a personal anecdote talking about the Sunday evening movie that used to play and how they
would all gather together to watch it.

As for the second generation, that has Sameera and Vicky, ages being 54 yrs and 40 yrs old
respectively in our 2nd generation both people talked about one of the most
impactful historical events were the death of the Gandhi’s. Interestingly each one had a different
Gandhi! While Sameera talked about the death of Ex PM Indira Gandhi, Vicky talked about the
death of Ex PM Rajiv Gandhi, Indira’s son!
When it came to the type of media used and how regularly they used it, both of them talked
about the use of Television, newspapers and Radios Sameera even recalled shewas in the 9th
grade when colored television came out for the first time.
None of the 2 mentioned any ‘major’ media development during their time but both saidthat media
has changed a lot with the internet. This was very similar to the 1st generation’s answer as they
both talked about the diversity and change in media duringrecent times.

Lastly, the third generation with Atiya and Bhavya ages being 15 yrs and 13 yrs. As for
impactful events, Atiya talked about Roe v Wade, The Russia/Ukraine War and section 377
whereas Bhavya spoke about the COVID pandemic.
As for media when they were teens (currently) they mentioned newspapers (TOI,
Hindustan times), social media, internet blogs, websites and television, Atiya said sheused
social media the most whereas Bhavya mentioned he uses television and his mobile phone the
most. (It's important to know that though both of these points are slightly different, both of
them are using the internet.) The responses from Europe werevery similar to this, all 3
mentioned the advancements of phones
Additionally, both said they didn't use media very regularly and used it mainly when amajor
event happens, Bhavya even said he mainly uses media for entertainment purposes.
As for the price, Atiya said she uses social media which is free, this is the topic for a common
debate saying is it really free if we have to pay so much for internet or a phone& if it is free
what's the price? No privacy? Bhavya on the other hand said he uses Netflix and other OTT
platforms which are about 500 Rs a month.
