Module 2 Lesson 2.1: Reproductive System of the Chicken

1. Draw and label the parts of the male reproductive system. (2 points each; any missing
information will have no corresponding points).
2. Draw and label the reproductive tract of female birds. You may download an image from the
internet as a reference, but make sure to make a figure of your own. (maximum points are 10, a figure
with missing information will only have a corresponding five points)
3. Enumerate, and at least in one sentence, provide a function of each part of the male and female
reproductive organs. (2 points each; any missing information will have no corresponding points)

- Male -Female

Testes - pair of organs that produce sperm. Ovary – produces the ova (yolk).

Vas deferens - is the duct through which sperm Infundibulum - Picks up the yolk and fertilized
are transported from the testes. the egg.

Cloaca – performs the function of sperm Magnum – this is where the thick albumen
ejaculation. (egg white) forms.

Isthmus - where the inner and outer shell

membranes form.

shell gland (or uterus) –shell is formed,

4. Determine the number of minutes or hour (s) of the developing egg of the chicken on each part
of its reproductive organ. (1 point each, a total of 7 points)

- infundibulum (or funnel) - 15 to 17 minutes.

- magnum - 3 hours.

- isthmus – 1.25 hours.

- shell gland (or uterus) - 20 or more hours.

- Vagina/Cloaca – few seconds or minutes.
