PHILIPPINE ELECTRICAL CODE

Chapter 1.0 General


Purpose of the Code- Practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards.

Important definitions:

Accessible(as applied to wiring methods)- Capable of being remove or exposed without damaging the building structure or finish or not
permanently closed in by the structure or finish of the building.

Accessible, Readily (Readily accessible)-Capable of being reached quickly for operation, renewal or inspections without requiring those to whom
ready access is requisite to climb over or remove obstacles or to resort to portable ladders.

Ampacity-The current in amperes , that a conductor can carry continuously under the conditions of use without exceeding its temperature.

Appliance-Utilization equipment, generally other than industrial, that is normally built in standard sizes.

Askarel- A generic term for a group of nonflammable synthetic chlorinated hydrocarbons used in electrical insulating media.

Automatic- Self acting, operating by its own mechanism when actuated by some impersonal influence.

Main bonding jumper- The connection between the grounded circuit conductor and the equipment grounding conductor at the service.

Branch circuit- The circuit conductors between the final overcurrent device protecting the circuit and the outlet(s).

General purpose branch circuit- A branch circuit that supplies two or more receptacles or outlets for lighting and appliances.

Individual branch circuit- A branch circuit that supplies only one utilization equipment.

Appliance branch circuit- A branch circuit that supplies energy to one or more outlets to which appliances are to be connected.

Circuit Breaker- A device designed to open or close the circuit by nonautomatic means.

Inverse Time Circuit Breaker- A qualifying term indicating that there is a purposely introduced a delay in the tripping action of the circuit breaker,
which delay decreases as the magnitude increases.

Continuous Load- A load where the maximum current is expected to continue for 3 hours or more.

Controller- A device or group of devices that serves to govern, in some predetermined manner

Device-A unit of electrical system that is intended to carry or control but not utilize electric energy.

Dustight- Constructed so that dust will not enter the enclosing case under specified test conditions.

Varying duty- Operation at loads, and for intervals of time, both of which may be subject to wide variation.

Continuous duty-Operation at substantially constant load for an indefinite long time.

Intermittent duty-Operation for alternate intervals (1) load and no lad (2) load and rest (3) load, no load and rest

Dwelling unit- a single unit, providing complete and independent living facilities for one or more persons

Equipment- A general term including material, fittings, devices, appliances, luminaires(fixtures), apparatus

Feeder- All circuit conductors between the service equipment, the source of a separately derived system, or other power supply source and the final
branch circuit overcurrent device.

Ground- A conducting connection, whether intentional or accidental, between electrical circuit or equipment and the earth or to some conducting body
that serves in place of earth.

Grounded conductor- A system or circuit conductor that is intentionally grounded.

Grounding conductor- A conductor used to connect equipment or the grounded circuit of a wiring system to a grounding electrode or electrodes.

Equipment Grounding Conductor- The conductor used to connect the non-carrying metal parts of equipment, raceways, and other enclosures to the
system grounded conductor, the grounding electrode conductor , at the service equipment or at the sources of a separately derived system.

Grounding Electrode Conductor- The conductor used to connect the grounding electrode(s) to the equipment grounding conductor, to the grounded
conductor, or to both, at the service, at each building or structure where supplied by feeder(s) or branch circuit(s).

Interrupting rating-The highest current at rated voltage that a device is intended to interrupt under standard test conditions.

Labeled- Equipment or materials to which has been attached a label, symbol, or other identifying marks of an organization that is acceptable to the
authority having jurisdiction.

Damp location- Locations protected from weather and not subject to saturation with water or other liquids.

Dry locations- A location not normally subject to dampness or wetness and may be temporarily subject to dampness or wetness in the case the
building under construction.

Outlet- A point on the wiring system at which current is taken to supply utilization equipment.

Overload- Operation of equipment in excess of normal, full-load rating, or of a conductor in excess of rated ampacity.

Nonlinear load- A load where the wave shape of the steady state current does not followed the wave shape of the applied voltage.

Panelboard- A single panel or group of panel units designed for assembly in the form of single panel

Rainproof- Constructed, protected so as to prevent the rain from interfering with the successful operation of the apparatus under specified test
conditions.

Raintight- Constructed or protected so that exposure to a beating rain will not result in the entrance of water under specified test conditions.

Receptacle outlet- An outlet where one or more receptacles are installed.

Remote Control Circuit- Any circuit that controls another circuit through a relay or an equivalent device.

Separately derived system- A premises wiring system whose power is derived from a source of electric energy or equipment other than a service.

Service Drop conductor - The overhead service conductors from the last pole or other aerial support to and including the splices, if any, connecting
to the service-entrance conductors at the building or other structure.

Service Entrance conductor- The service conductors between the terminals of the service equipment and a point usually outside the building, clear
building walls, where joined by tap or splice to the service drop.

Underground Service Entrance conductor- The service conductors between the terminals of the service equipment and the point of connection to
the service lateral.

Service Lateral- The underground service conductor between the street main, including the first risers at a pole or other structure or from
transformers, and the first point of connection to the service-entrance conductors in a terminal box or meter or other enclosure.

Utilization Equipment-Equipment that utilizes electric energy for electronic, electrochemical, chemical, heating, lighting

Watertight- Constructed so that moisture will not enter the enclosure under specified test conditions.

Weatherproof- Constructed or protected so that exposure to the weather will not interfere with successful operation.

Electrical Permits:

Before starting any installation, alteration or repair on electrical system…the owner shall obtained electrical permit to office of building official and for
watercrafts form Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA)

RA 7920- New Electrical Engineering Law

Minimum information for electrical permit:

1. Applicant

3. Licensed Electrical practitioner for the in-charge of installation

Entrance and Access to work space:
One entrance not less than 600mm wide and 2000m high working space on electrical equipment.
One entrance for large equipment on switchboard and control panels exceeding 1,800mm

Where voltage exceeds 600V: warning signs” DANGER-HIGH VOLTAGE-KEEP OUT”

Work space on Manhole access cover that weighs 45kg and the installation operating 600V or less

Chapter 2. Wiring and Protection

1000V or less or 1kV over-impedance grounded systems


600V or less-solidly grounded neutral system

14mm2 or smaller or larger- an insulated grounded conductor shall be identified by continuous white or gray outer finish or by three continuous white stripes

Flexible cords-insulated grounded conductor shall be white or gray outer finish


Multi conductor cables- insulated grounded conductor shall be white or gray outer finish
- 22mm2 or larger employ external ridge on grounded conductor
For circuit 50V or less or 50V or more- use insulation white or gray or three continuous white stripes

For screw shell Devices with attached leads-white or gray finish


Art. 2.10 All about Branch Circuits
1. Rating-The ampere rating or setting of overcurrent protective device shall determine the circuit rating.
2. 50A or more multi outlet branch circuits- shall supply nonlighting outlet loads on industrial premises
3. A 3 phase, 4 wire system used to supply non-linear loads should the power system consideration to design for the high harmonic neutral current
4. Where a multiwire branch circuit supplies more than one device or equipment on the same yoke, shall disconnect simultaneously all ungrounded conductors.
5. 230 volts –nominal voltage
6. 125/250 V single phase ,15-20A GFCI required-Bathrooms, garage, outdoor receptacles, crawl spaces, unfinished basements, kitchen, laundry, utility, wet bar sinks, boathouses
7. Number of branch circuit required in the panelboard-the minimum number of branch circuits shall be determined form the total calculated load and the size or rating of the circuits
to be used.
8. Small appliance branch circuit- two or more 20A branch circuit /circuit breaker for all receptacle outlets. Such circuit have no other outlets.

9. Laundry Branch circuits-one 20A branch circuit to supply for laundry receptacle outlet. Such circuit shall have no other outlets.
10. Bathroom branch circuits-one 20A GFCI branch circuit to be installed in the bathroom weather proof. Such circuit have no other outlets.
11. Single Branch circuit- one 20A, 3680 VA , 2-wire branch circuit for 50 m 2 or less dwelling unit.
12. Dwelling unit-115/230V, single phase, 15-20A branch circuits shall protected by Arc-fault circuit interrupter.
13. Location of Arc fault circuit interrupter- 1,800mm of the branch circuit overcurrent device or CB and shall be installed in metal raceway or cable with metallic sheath.

Branch Circuit Minimum Ampacity 600V or less


General : Branch circuit shall have allowable ampacity not less than the maximum load to be served.
Branch Circuit Conductor Formula: 100% of non continuous load + 125% of Continuous load
3% Voltage Drop- from branch circuit to the farthest load outlet of power.
5% Voltage Drop- Maximum total VD both feeders and branch circuits to the farthest load
Minimum Range requirements:
40A ampacity branch circuit rating, 5.5 mm2 THHN- 8 ¾ kW industrial range
Other Loads:
2.0mm2 –Minimum wire other than cooking, range
-Fixture wires and Flexible cords shall be permitted to be smaller than 2.0mm2
Minimum clearances:
450mm-Individual lampholders or luminaires and receptacle outlets

Branch Circuit Minimum Ampacity 600V or more


General: The ampacity of branch circuit conductors shall not be less than 125% of the designed potential load utilization equipment that will be operated simultaneously.
Branch Circuit Conductor Formula: 100% of non continuous load + 125% of Continuous load
Heavy duty lampholder- 20A branch circuit rating not less than 660 Watts if admedium type, not less than 750W of other type.
Outlet devices- shall have an ampere rating that is not less than the load to be served
Single Receptacle on individual branch circuit-shall have ampere rating not less than the branch circuit rating or conductor amapacity.

FEEDERS

FEEDER CONDUCOCTOR SIZING: NONCONTINUOUS LOAD + 125% CONTINUOUS LOAD


1. FEEDER Conductor shall not be less than service conductor where the feeder conductor carry the total load supplied by the service conductors
with an ampacity of 55 A or less.
2. Feeder supplying transformer shall have ampacity not be less than the sum of nameplate ratings of transformers
3. Feeder supplying transformers and utilization equipment shall not be less than the sum of the nameplate ratings of the transformers and 125%
Of load utilization equipment.
4. OVERCURRENT PROTECTION SIZING shall not be less than the non-continuous load plus 125% of Continuous load.
5. Feeders with common neutral-Two or Three sets 3-Wire or Two sets 4-Wire or 5 Wire feeders.
6. Feeders supplying 15 and 20A receptacle branch circuit shall have GFCI.
7. Each feeder disconnect rated 1000A or more on solidly grounded system of more than 150V to ground but not exceed 600V shall have GFCI.

Size of Conductor 600V or less:

I. Conductor size and support


a. Overhead Span
1) 600 V or less- use a minimum of 5.5 mm2 (copper) or 8.0 mm2 (Aluminum) up to 15 m in length
And 8.0 mm2 (copper) or 14.0 mm2 (Aluminum) for above 15 m length overhead span unless supported by messenger wire
2) 600 V or more- use a minimum of 14.0 mm2 (copper) or 22.0 mm2 (Aluminum) in cable form.
b. Festoon Lighting-use a minimum of 3.5 mm2 up to 12 m in length unless supported by messenger wire and the messenger supported by
strain insulators.
II. Lighting Equipment outdoor installation-277 volts to ground shall be permitted for luminaries (lighting fixtures) for illumination of outdoor
areas of industrial establishments, office, schools, stores and commercial or public bldgs. Not less than 900 mm from windows or platforms

Clearance from Ground:


1. 3000 mm- above finished grade, sidewalks, platform not exceed 150 volts
2. 3,600 mm- over residential property and driveways, commercial areas not subject to truck traffic voltage not to exceed 300 volts.
3. 4,500 mm- those areas listed in 3,600 mm where voltage exceed 300 volts to ground.
4. 5,500 mm- over public streets, alleys, roads, parking areas subject to truck traffic other than residential.

Vertical Clearance of open conductors or multiconductor cables from building less than 600V- 2,500 mm above the roof surface

BUILDING FEEDER REQUIREMENTS:

Number of Supplies (More than one building on the same property)- Shall only be supplied by ONE(1) feeder or branch circuit.

- Multiwire branch Circuit shall be considered a single circuit (One feeder).

Additional Feeder Allowed:

2. Emergency Sytems
3. Legally required standby systems
4. Optional standby system’
5. Parallel power production systems
6. Systems designed for multiple connection of sources of supply for the purpose of enhanced reliability.

Additional Feeder for Special Occupancies:


1. Multiple Occupancy buildings where there is no space available for supply equipment accessible to all occupants
2. A single building or other structure sufficiently large to make two or more supplies necessary.

Capacity Requirements:

Additional services/feeder shall be permitted if the capacity or total load are in excess of 2000 AMPERES at 600 V less.

DISCONNECTING MEANS- Shall be provided for ALL UNGROUNDED CONDUCTORS.

Maximum Number of Disconnects:

-Shall consists of Two(2) to SIX (6) switches or SIX CIRCIT BREAKERS mounted in a single enclosure.

Rating of Disconnect for FEEDER AND SERVICES:
1. One Circuit Installation- D.M. shall not be less than 15A to supply only limited loads of a single branch circuit.
2. One Circuit Installation-Dwelling Unit- Not less than 20A with single branch circuit.
3. Two Circuit Installations-Consisting of not more than TWO 2-wire branch circuits shall not be less than 30A.
4. One Family Dwelling- The feeder D.M. shall not be less than 60A, 3 wire.

Overcurrent Devices-If not readily accessible shall be installed on the load side 60 volts below while Oil Switches, Vacuum CB, Sulfur Hexafluoride CB (SF6) shall be installed on the supply side.

SERVICES

OVERHEAD SERVICE ENTRANCE CONDUCTOR- Minimum size is 8.0 mm2 (Copper) and 14.0 mm2 (Aluminum)
Clearance above roof- 2400 mm

VERTICAL CLEARANCE FROM GROUND:


3000 mm- service entrance of buildings, above areas or sidewalks accessible to pedestrian
3,600 mm- over residential property and driveways, and commercial areas not subject to truck traffic where voltage not to exceed 300 volts to ground
4,500 mm- those listed in 3,600 mm but the voltage exceeds 300 volts to ground
5,500 mm- over public streets, alleys, roads, parking areas subject to truck traffic, driveways other than residential property

SERVICE MASTS (by means of guy)- Support of Service Drop Conductor

UNDERGROUND SERVICE LATERAL CONDUCTORS- Shall be insulated

Minimum Size and Rating:

-Minimum size is 8.0 mm2 (Copper) and 14.0 mm2 (Aluminum)


Exception: Conductors supplying limited load of single branch circuit shall not be smaller than 3.5 mm2 (copper) or 5.5 mm2 (aluminium)

Protection of Underground lateral Conductor- Protected by raceway wiring method

GENERAL FORMULA: = 100% NON CONTINUOUS LOAD + 125% OF CONTINUOUS LOAD

AMPACITY OF SERVICE ENTRANCE CONDCUTOR:


1. The ampacity of service entrance conductors shall not be less than the LOAD.
2. The minimum ampacity of ungrounded conductor SHALL NOT BE LESS THAN THE RATING OF THE SERVICE DISCONNECTING MEANS.

3000 mm -Type MI and MC Cable-shall have grade level not exposed to physical damage

OTHER THAN SRVICE CABLE-INDIVIDUAL OPEN CONDUCTORS SHALL NOT BE INSTALLED 3000 mm of grade level where exposed to physical damage

OVERHEAD SERVICE HEAD: Shall be raintight service head

SERVICE EQUIPMENT:

ENCLOSED- Energized parts shall be enclosed so that they will not be exposed to accidental contact

GUARDED- Energized parts that are not enclosed shall be installed in switchboard

Note: EACH SERVICE DISCONNECT SHALL SIMULTANEOUSLY DISCONNECT ALL UNGROUNDED SERVICE CONDUCTORS.

UNGROUNDED CONDUCTOR- Such protection shall be provided an overcurrent device in SERIES with ungrounded service conductor that has a rating or setting not higher than the allowable ampacity of

Conductor.
