4.0 SITE DESCRIPTION
The site is located at Plot No. BB.A03.055, at Business Bay, Dubai- United Arab Emirates. The time
of investigation site was not levelled, the boreholes location and level is mention in Table No. 1. All
sides of the site is under construction.
PROJECT LOCATION
The geology of the United Arab Emirate, and Arabian Gulf Area, has been substantially influenced by the
deposition of marine sediments associated with numerous sea level changes during relatively recent
geological time, with the exemption of mountainous regions shared with Oman in the North-East, the
country relatively low-lying with near surface geology dominated by Quaternary to late Pleistocene age,
mobile Aeolian dune Sands and Sabhkha/ evaporates deposits.
The near surface geology of coastal Dubai consists of Quaternary marine, aeolian, sabkha and fluvial
deposits overlying variably cemented Pleistocene sands (aeolianite and marine calcarenite), in turn
overlying the Barzaman Formation, which comprises a thick succession of fluvial sediments characterised
by poorly sorted conglomerates. These conglomerates are dominated by clasts of harzburgite, chert and
limestone, set within a dolomitic cement; although the degree of cementation is variable and local
palaeosol horizons can also be recognised. Although largely obscured by dune fields, the Barzaman
Formation can be traced in boreholes and sporadic exposures from the coast to the mountain front 60km
or more to the east
The site is situated in DUBAI where a hot arid climate prevails. A hot arid climate is one where
evaporation exceeds precipitation such as rain, snow and dewfall. This climate regime produces
characteristics hot dessert terrains. Average annual rainfall may only be a few centimeters (even only a
few millimeters in some parts) which usually occurs seasonally and sometimes only for single cloudburst.
Summer shade temperatures are frequently in excess 40c and humidity maybe very high near the coast.
The contrast between maximum night and day temperatures and between night and day humidity is
often great. Strong persistent winds are normal in many areas. This unfavorable climate imposes adverse
on the concrete structures such as:
Fieldwork was carried out from 28th December 2022 to 11th January 2023, comprised of drilling of five
(05) numbers of boreholes up to a depth of ten (10) meters and four (04) numbers of boreholes up to
a depth of fifteen (15) meters below existing ground level. And six (6) number of cone penetration tests
(CPT).
The field investigation was directed by Independent Laboratory Geologist. Ground levels at the
boreholes were measured with reference to the existing ground levels only.
6.2 DRILLING
Nine (09) boreholes were drilled from 28th December 2022 to 06th of January 2023, down to a depth of
10.0m and 15.00m below the existing ground surface. Borehole layout presented in Appendix A
The drillings were executed by using Rotary Drilling Machines (GT-RIG-01) using rotary Drilling
Method. The Borehole Logs are presented in Appendix B. And the boreholes are co-ordinates are
mention Table No. 1. Engineering log of the borehole is presented in Appendix B, together with
explanation Sheets (Borehole legends) defining the terms and symbols used in preparing the logs.
Table No. 1: Summary of Boreholes Information

The initial 150mm interval or 25 blows (whichever first achieved) is intended to ensure “seating"of
sampler such that it penetrates beyond the zone of influence of any soil disturbance at the base of the
borehole. The sum number of blows required to drive the sampler over the final300mm is termed as
"N" value, and is considered indicative of the in-situ relative density of soil.
The test results are shown in the boring log at the respective test depth. Interpretation of the standard
penetration test (SPT) results can be found in legends of boring log appendix B.
7.2 CONE PENETRATION TEST (CPT)
On 11th January 2022, a total of six (6) cone penetration tests were carried out at the
specified locations within the site by the sub contractor . Each test was advanced up to refusal.
A truck mounted CPT rig, CPT2/MKJ-527, was used. The adopted test method complies with BS 1377 Part
9 1990, Clause 3.14, and
ISSMEF - International Reference Test Procedure, with pore water pressure measurement (U2).
The test was carried out by penetrometer tip with electric sensors permitting simultaneous data
acquisition and graphical presentation of the following parameters:
Tip resistance, qc (MPa)
Sleeve friction, fs (MPa)
Pore water pressure, U2 (MPa).
Standard saturation procedure was used of the cone for pore water pressure measurement.
Friction ratio (Rf, %) defined as fs/qc was derived and presented as the test continues. The tests
were terminated upon refusal
The following table provides details of the CPT points and the report attached in appendix C.

The laboratory testing’s conducted on the selected samples as per the schedule prepared by the
geologist based on the type and properties of sample and engineering objectives. The following tests
were carried out as per the standard test method; the results are presented in Appendix D of this
report.
Table No.3: List of laboratory tests conducted
Our interpretations of soil and ground water conditions, as described above are based on data
obtained from the boring drilled for this study and review of existing information. It is likely that
disclosed variations in subsurface conditions exist at the site and that seasonal variations in
groundwater level occur. Although not observed at the site, it is common for seasonal seepage to
develop at the interface between the surficial soil and soil at deeper depths.
11.0 DISCUSSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
11.1 FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATIONS
The choice of particular type of foundation depends upon the following:
The character of the Soil encountered.
The presence of Ground Water at the site.
The magnitude of the imposed load.
The project characteristics.
This project,
Construction of Peninsula at business Bay .
Ground water was encountered in the range of 6.50-7.05m below the drilled depth as
indicated on the borehole logs.
11.2 FOUNDATION TYPE
However, at the time of writing this report detailed information regarding foundation layout or
loadings had not been made available so that only a general discussion can be undertaken.
Based on upon the boreholes log Field and routine Laboratory tests results and position of
the Ground Water Table and nature of the project, and the presence of loose strata which is
located from 2.50m to 3.00m depth (In BH-6 & BH-8), It is recommended to perform one of
following methods in order to have a method can be applied for this case, taking in the
consideration the economically and feasibility factors
However, it solely depends on the structural engineer to design the foundation according to the
existing geodynamic condition.
11.3 SHALLOW FOUNDATION
11.3.1 Geotechnical Parameters for Design of Shallow Foundations:
Proper selection of foundation members, dictates their being capable of sustaining the structural
loads and transmitting these loads safely to the supporting ground, so it must provide for two points.
One is to avoid foundation soil failure, which leads to structural collapse, and the second is to
prevent excessive settlement, which may lead to restricting the possibility of using the structure.
The allowable bearing pressures are calculated using practical experience, the results obtained from
the field / laboratory tests and the empirical equations established by Terzaghi / Meyerhof and
developed by Joseph Bowles.
- Excavate and level the existing soil to the level of foundation depth.
- Compact using heavy rollers, the soil at the bottom of excavation at level, to at least 95% of its
maximum dry density at its optimum moisture content obtained from Modified Proctor
Compaction Test.
- Plate bearing test shall be carried out at foundation level as quality control measure to verify the
required allowable bearing pressure and total settlement criteria under foundations.
- The compacted surface should then be protected immediately covering with a layer of concrete
blinding.
(B) Recommendations based on BH-5, BH-7:
Table 8: Net Allowable Bearing Pressure for Isolated/Strip Footing
- The compacted surface should then be protected immediately covering with a layer of concrete
blinding.
(C) Recommendations based on BH-6, BH-8 and BH-9 ( with loose strata from 2.50m to 3.00m:
C.1) Recommendation without soil improvement:-
- The compacted surface should then be protected immediately covering with a layer of concrete
blinding.
- Excavate and level the existing soil to the depth of -2.75m below the existing ground surface.
- Compact using heavy rollers, the soil at the bottom of excavation at level of -2.75m below the
existing ground surface, to at least 95% of its maximum dry density at its optimum moisture
content obtained from Modified Proctor Compaction Test.
- Fill by layers up to the -0.25m from the foundation level & compact each layer 25cm, using heavy rollers
to at least 95% of its maximum dry density at its optimum moisture content obtained from Modified
Proctor Compaction Test. The foundation depth may vary according to architectural requirement.
- Place one (1) layer of selected granular backfill materials (Road Base) 25cm thick to reach the required
foundation level. The layer shall be compacted by heavy vibratory roller to a degree of compaction not
less than 98% of the maximum dry density as obtained by modified proctor compaction test.
- Plate bearing test shall be carried out at foundation level as quality control measure to verify the
required allowable bearing pressure and total settlement criteria under foundations.
- The compacted surface should then be protected immediately covering with a layer of concrete
blinding.
(D) Recommendation for slab on grade
Prior to construction of the slab on grade. The top disturb soil should be removed to -0.50m depths
Compact using heavy roller at the bottom of excavation and add layers of backfilling each
250mm with (CBR>30%) and compaction not less than 95% by modified proctor test, to reach
the required foundation level.
The compacted layer surface should then be protected by immediately covering with a layer of
concrete blinding.
Allowable bearing pressure and modulus of sub grade reaction can be used for Slab on grade as
provided below. This allowable bearing pressure is obtained using the Terzaghi, Joseph Bowles and
Meyerhof bearing pressure for foundations based on the results of standard penetration tests.
Recommendation for Slab on Grade: Net Allowable Bearing Pressure (90kN/m 2). Modulus of Sub
grade Reaction (10800kN/m3).
In the areas where structural fill material under foundations is required, Then the materials to be used
shall be:
- Free of organic matter or other deleterious substances (0.1% Max).
- Materials should be non to slightly plastic (max P.I. of 6).
- Materials passing sieve No. 200 shall be less than or equal 5 to 10%.
- Well graded granular mixture with no particles larger than 75mm.
- Sulphate content value shall not be more than 1.2gm/Litre.
- Liquid limit not more than 25%.
- Design CBR value of 4 days soaked and compacted at 95% of the max. dry density in accordance with
BS 1377:P4:1990, Method 3.5 or 3.6 that should be not less than 30%.
- Materials under foundation shall be compacted to 95% of maximum dry density as obtained
modified proctor ( ASTMD 1557),
- Plate bearing test shall be carried out every 1.0m interval and at the Foundation level on fill as
quality control measure to verify the required allowable bearing pressure and total settlement
criteria under foundations

Where space permits and above the water table, the sides of the excavations would be
necessary to be battered and as a guide the CIRIA Report No.97 “Trenching Practice”
recommends a maximum safe temporary slope of 26-37° to the horizontal up to 3.0m depth
below existing ground level. For deep excavations, if any, detailed study of the side slope
stability should be carried out by a competent engineering using the findings of investigation.
Chemical analysis of soil and indicates possible Sulphate and chloride attack against corrosion. As
per BRE Special Digest 1, 2005 and based on Sulphate results of soil, the site has been classified as
follows:
- Design Sulphate class (DS-class): DS-1
- Aggressive chemical environment for concrete class (ACEC-Class): AC-2
- Design Chemical Class for intended working life of at least 100years: DC-2
For above mentioned site class, recommended cement and combination group as per Table D2 of
BRE SD1 is B&C.
However, it must be noted that the above classification does not reflect the significance of chloride
ions in concrete surroundings. Hence, careful consideration should be given to the
recommendations made in CIRIA Publication 2002\Guide to the construction of reinforced concrete
in the Arabian Peninsula”.
According to CIRIA Special Publication No.31guidelines, there is no widely accepted view on the
concentration as which chlorides becomes significant in soil or ground water but limited experience
in the gulf region suggests it may be as low as 0.05% particularly in situations where alternate
wetting and drying or capillary rise effect the concrete. With this in view and as per table
No.5.1&5.2 of CIRIA SP 31 following site classificationand concrete recommendations shall be taken.
- Exposure condition: d (iii)
- Minimum Cement content for 20mm aggregates (kg/m3) = 320kg/m3-400kg/m3
- Maximum free water/cement ratio: 0.42
As per CIRIA SP 31, concrete containing pulverized fuels ash (Pfa), ground granulated blast Furnace
slag (ggbs) and silica fumes (sf) are highly resistant to penetration by chlorides due to their increased
binding capacity and refined pore structure.
Also, when resistance is needed against both, sulphate and chlorides, concrete may need to be
protected from the soil and ground water with a water proofing membrane or tanking and a
compromise has to be made on the type of cement to be used, generally, a cement containing at
least3.5% but not more than9.0% C3A is preferred. Each situation should be considered on its merit.
With this in view, for present site condition, foundation and other concrete structures coming in
contact with the soil should be constructed using MSRC/ASTM TYPE II mixed with GGBS/PFa/ silica
fumes etc.
Note: More details on mix design and proportions will always need to be done with concrete
specialist.
13.0 QUALITY CONTROL
Every project and construction site is unique, making it vitally important that appropriate design
data, construction drawings, specifications, change orders and related documents be reviewed by
the respective design and construction professionals participating in the project. The performance
of the foundations and building pads for this project will depend on correct interpretation of our
geotechnical engineering report and proper compliance of the project activities with regard to our
geotechnical recommendations and to the project drawings and specifications.
If subsurface conditions vary significantly from those described in this report, we should be notified
immediately to determine if our opinions, conclusions and recommendations need to be re-
evaluated and to decide if additional field and laboratory tests need to be performed, so that
supplemental engineering analyses and recommendations can be provided.
This study was performed in accordance with accepted geotechnical engineering practice using the
standards and skill currently exercised by geotechnical engineers practicing in this area.
