 An active listener must listen discriminately and discern how effectively the interplay
verbal and nonverbal signals in oral communication holds his/her attention

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE OF VERBAL AND NON VERBAL SIGNALS


 What is the difference? Verbal communication is using speech or spoken word to
exchange information, emotion and thoughts. Otherwise, non-verbal communication is
conveying and exchanging messages without the use of spoken words

DISCRIMINATIVE LISTENING
 Discriminative listening means being attentive to the verbal aspects of spoken text,
which includes the use of powerful or leading statements, questions, interjection,
example, idioms, quotations, humor, anecdote, figurative language or discourse
markers.

DISCOURSE MARKERS
 Discourse markers includes gambits or expressions used by the speaker to help the
listener understand the connection or relationship between different parts of the
message.
WHAT ARE GAMBITS
 Gambit is a remark which you make to someone in order to start or continue a
conversation with them.

- Agreeing
- Disagreeing
- Illustrating your point

 Moreover, discriminative listening means listening closely to changes the speakers tone,
pitch, volume, stress, intonation, rate, and phrasing.
 It also means taking note of nonverbal cues, such as facial expressions and hand body
gestures
