INTRODUCTION

Sieve analysis is a method that is used to determine the grain size distribution of soils that are
greater than 0.075 mm in dimeter. It consists of shaking the soil sample through a set of sieves
that have progressively smaller diameter. The experiment is performed to determine the
percentage of each size of grain that is contained within soil sample, and the results of the test
can be used to produce the grainsize distribution curve. This test method is used primarily to
grade aggregates. The results are used to determine the compliance of the particle size
distribution with applicable specification requirements and to provide necessary data for
controlling the production of various aggregate products and mixtures containing aggregates.
Particle size is one of the criteria used to ascertain whether the soil is suitable for building roads,
embankments, and dams.
DISCUSSION OF RESULTS
The results of sieve analysis are generally expressed in terms of the percentage of the total
weight of soil that passed through different sieves. Sieve shaking machine is a device used for
seprating wanted elements from unwanted material or for characterizing the particle size
distribution of a sample soil, typically using a woven screen such as mesh. The representative
sample dry soil is placed on top of sieves stack and carefully covers it with lid. Shake the stack
for about 5 minutes. After shaking, weigh the sample retained on each sieves including the
weight retained in pan. All the data were recorded in the preliminary data sheet.

During the experiment, there are few precaution steps that should be looked into at to get the best
results. First, the sieve should not be overloaded so that all particles inside the sieve are able to
reach sieve opening during the sieving process.

In our results, our weight retained in sieve 3/8 is 35.24g and percent retained is 7.192%. In our
sieve 50, weight retained 45.47g and percent retained is 82.341%. And, lastly, in sieve no. 200
weight retained is 27.17 g and percent retained is 96.829%.
CONCLUSIONS
To conclude, sieve analysis is the easiest method for determining particle, size of soil, and that
this technique can be used for people who work in laboratories such as government laboratories
and private independent laboratories. We concluded that the soil sample used in this experiment
is uniformly graded since it passed all the criteria to be classified as well graded soil. The
calculation that has been made also proves that the soil sample used is suitable for construction
materials
