1. Design a BJT base drive circuit with the configuration of Fig. 1 that has a spike of 1 A at turn-on
and maintains a base current of 0.2 A in the on state. The voltage Vi is a pulse of 0 to 15 V with a 50
percent duty ratio, and the switching frequency is 100 kHz. Assume that VBE is 0.9 V when the
transistor is on.

Ans: Since initially the capacitor is uncharged, thus it can be assumed to be short-circuited. The
potential difference is zero, therefore the value of resistance R 1 is obtained using the initial current
spike value
V i−V BE 15−0.9
R1= = =14.1 Ω
IB 1 1
Now at a steady state the capacitor is charged and open-circuited zero current, thus R 1 and R2 are is
series. The steady state base current value is used to calculate R 2
V i−V BE
R 1 + R2=
IB2
15−0.9
14.1+ R2=
0.9
14.1+ R2=70.5

R2=70.5−14.1

R2=56.4 Ω

Since the duty ratio is 50% for 100KHz, the transistor is on for 5 μsec, assuming that on time of the
transistor is 5 times constant, thus time constant T=1 μsec . Also, the time constant is given by

T =R eq x C ,
where R eq is the Thevenin resistance when the transistor is ON.

T =1 μsec
T =R eq x C

( R1 × R 2 )
Req =
( R 1 + R2 )
(14.1 ×56.4 )
1 μsec = xC
( 14.1+56.4 )
1 μsec =11.28 x C
C=88.65 nF
Hence the required model is shown below:
