SAFE Work Procedures for Use of Portable Platform Ladder

PURPOSE To develop a guide for the proper and safe use of portable Platform ladder in the
worksite

RESPONSIBILITIES The Managers and Supervisors must ensure that the safe work procedure for use of
portable Platform ladders are being communicated to the workers prior to work
commencement

The supervisors are to ensure that the risk control measures stated in the risk
assessment is being implemented and monitored.

Workers are to ensure that the safe work procedures are being adhered to.

PROCEDURES
Safe Work Procedures for Use of Portable Platform Ladder

a. Workers are recommended to use the ladder for a short period of time
(<10mins). Thereafter, supervisors are to implement worker rotation for the
use of the Platform ladder. This is to prevent the worker from falling off the
ladder due to loss of concentration.

b. Use of portable Platform ladders is only recommended for short period of work
eg 5 minutes to 15 minutes.

c. Ladders shall not be placed near open side whereby there is a possibility of
the ladder falling towards the direction of the open side.

d. Work performed by bending / stretching the body outside ladders shall be


prohibited.

e. Buddy system is to be adopted for use of portable Platform ladders.

f. The site management will provide portable Platform ladders for use by
workers upon confirming that buddy system (A user and a co-worker) is
available during the use.

g. Adaptation of buddy system for use of Platform ladder will be briefed to


workers during tool box meeting

h. Ladder must be inspected and ensure free of slippery steps before use.

i. Ladders is to be inspected once every 7 days by the WSH Supervisor and


‘Safe To Use’ tag is to be displayed on the ladder

j. Safety shoes must be worn during the use of Platform ladder, to prevent
slipping hazard.

k. Climbing and descending of ladders shall be done using both hands.

l. Ladders are not to be placed where they are liable to be struck by doors,
vehicles and passer-by.

Human Factor
a. Workers to have sufficient and uninterrupted rest the night before

b. Supervisor to ensure workers have a work rotation if prolong work is required


so workers have sufficient recharge time before working again

Emergency Response Procedures

a. Co-Workers or Site Supervisor shall inform main contractor and raise the
alarm should a falls from height from the use of Platform ladder

b. Workers shall be briefed on the workplace emergency escape route and


assembly area.

c. All workers shall be given a list of emergency contact numbers to summon for
assistance should an accident occurs.
