DIFFERENTIATE BIOTIC FROM ABIOTIC

COMPONENTS OF AN ECOSYSTEM
for Science Grade 7
Quarter 2 / Week 6
FOREWORD

This self-learning kit is specially created to supply learners with

materials that would assist them in learning, despite this pandemic
that we are facing. This learning kit includes pretest and post-test,
activities which they will be able to enjoy it and at the same
learning about the Differentiation of abiotic and biotic
components of an ecosystem. This is in accordance with the Dep.
Ed. MELCS for Science 7. we are hoping that through this, you will
be provided not just quality education but also a meaningful and
enjoyable learning experience. May you have a wonderful
journey in this self-learning kit on Differentiate abiotic and biotic
components of an ecosystem.

Enjoy yourself from learning…

2
OBJECTIVE
At the this module you are expected to:
K. Define and identify biotic and abiotic components of an
ecosystem.
S. Create a poster that display biotic and abiotic components in
an ecosystem.
A. Initiate simple ways and means on how to preserve an
ecosystem.

LEARNING COMPTENCIES
Differentiate biotic from abiotic components of an
ecosystem. S7LT-IIh-9

I. WHAT HAPPENED
PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRE-TEST:

Take a look at the picture below. It is an example of an

ecosystem. Now, I want you to identify the things that can be
found in this ecosystem. Write them on the blanks provided
below the picture.

3
List down the things that you can identify from the picture above?

II. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

DISCUSSION:

Figure 1. abiotic and biotic factors of an ecosystem

https://biodifferences.net/difference-between-abiotic-and-biotic-factors/

The environment is a collection of living and non-living things.

Mosses growing on rocks, garden snails gliding on fences, and fish
swimming in water are just a few examples of how living and non-
living things interact. The living components of the environment
are also called organisms. The non-living components make up
the physical environment of these organisms.
An ecosystem is compose of communities which organisms
or living components interact with the physical environment or the
non-living components.

How do we know the difference between biotic and abiotic

components of an ecosystem?

The primary difference between these two components is

that abiotic factors include those components of the ecosystem
which are non-living part of any habitat. On the other hand, biotic
factors include living components of the ecosystem.

4
Abiotic factors are the non-living components of an
ecosystem that living organisms mostly rely on. These includes the
Sun, wind, rain, soil, water, stones, sands, temperature. They play
an important role to every living organisms or biotic components
in an ecosystem. Certain aspects of the physical environment
determine the distribution of plants and animals on land.

Biotic components refers to the different kinds of organisms

that interact with the environment. The environment may directly
or indirectly influence the growth of the biotic factors. Like for
example if there are sudden changes in the temperature of the
particular ecosystem, its ill effects can be observed on the plants,
animals and living organisms present in the area. Such may lead
organisms migration, extinction, or may enable organisms to learn
to adapt to the changes in order to survive.

Biotic components manifest certain manifestations which

differentiate them from that of abiotic factors are; they respond to
stimuli, they require energy to work, they grow and develop, they
contain heredity material like DNA (Deoxyribose nucleic acid)
which are transfer from one generation to another, they also
reproduce and have the capacity to feed their young ones.

Vocabulary Words
1. Environment - is a collection of living and non-living things. Like
mosses growing on rocks, garden snails gliding on
garden fences, and fishes swimming in water are just a
few examples of how living and nonliving things interact.
2. Organisms - it is the living components make up the
environment.
3. Biotic - refers to the living components that can be found in an
ecosystem.

4. Abiotic - are the non-living components that can be found in an

ecosystem.
5. Ecosystem - the place were biotic communities interact with the
physical environment or abiotic factors.

ACTIVITY: Draw an ecosystem you have observed in your

community. Do it creatively. Do this in a separate bond paper.

SYNOPSIS
The level of biological organization
beyond the organism is the population
which is a group of organisms of the
same species living together. Group of
population form a community. Biotic
components that interact with the
physical environment is called ecosystem.
All ecosystems on earth form the
biosphere the realm of earth where life
exists. In the ecosystem, biotic
components interact with one another
and also interact with the biotic factors.
