LEARNING MATERIALS IN ENHANCING LISTENING SKILLS

This material is for teachers’ guide.

(Language Learning Activity for Listening)

Topic: Perform a Task by Following Verbal Instructions

Time Frame: 60 minutes

Target Audience: Grade 9 Students

Materials needed: Laptop and projector, videos, audio, speaker, lapel, pen and paper, and magic box.

Reference(s): Google, StuDoCu.com, YouTube, etc.

OBJECTIVES: At the end of the module, students are expected to:

 gain understanding in following verbal instructions;


 know the process of following verbal instructions;
 share your “AHA!” moment in a pen and paper activity;
 appreciate listening texts in real-life situations; and
 perform a task by correctly following verbal instructions.

MOTIVATION:

“Hear Me Out”

Direction: The teacher will give five (5) sounds that the students will guess. The teacher
will use speaker to let the students hear it clearly.

The following are the sounds they need to guess:

1. Sound of the wind.

2. Sound of the mosquito flying.

3. Sound of crying.

4. Sound of flowing water.

5. Sound of Dinosaur‟s roar.

LESSON DEVELOPMENT:

What is Verbal Instructions?

Verbal instructions are medium-to-long goal-directed, task-oriented, and verbally administered to


an individual or group of people in cognitive, affective, kinesthetic performances in order to enhance
learning skills.

- Listening to the news (weather forecast, sports report announcements, etc.) on the radio,

- Discussing work, current problems with family or colleagues,

- Making arrangements (appointments, exchanging news),

- Chatting at a party or other social gathering,

- Hearing announcements over the loudspeaker (at a railway station or airport),

- Receiving instructions, requirements, tasks,

- Attending a lesson, seminar, - Being interviewed, interviewing,

- Listening to recorded or broadcast songs,

- Attending a formal occasion (wedding, prize-giving, other ceremonies),

- Getting professional advice (from a doctor, etc.),

- Being tested orally in a subject study.

Why is it important?

 Following instructions is an important skill to cultivate in everyday life.


 In an academic setting, following instructions can have an impact on grades, subject learning, and
skill execution.

How to give better instructions?

1. Give directions in a helpful, non-aggressive way.


2. Be specific, not vague.
3. Give context for the task you need done.
4. Make allowances for different learning styles.
5. Don‟t micromanage.

How to follow a Verbal Instructions?

1. Listen attentively.

3. Ask questions if needed.
4. Respond with a good attitude.
5. Ready yourself and look forward for the outcome.

What to Do: The teacher will administer the material through playing a song and will let the
students analyze if what is the conveyed message in a given song. The teacher will read aloud the
instructions of the activity.

projector. You should remember the given questions to you. I will read it for twice. In a one (1)
whole sheet of paper, you should answer these questions:

going to write the missing word or lyrics in this familiar song. This is for 10 points only.

4. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

“AHA! MOMENT”

What to Do: The teacher will read aloud the instructions in front of the class using a lapel.

Instructions: You will be writing your “AHA!” moment that you heard in your community, such as
in Television, from your friend, on the radio, conservation with a family or colleagues, chatting at a
party or other social gathering, hearing announcements over the loudspeaker, from a discussion or
seminar, from interview, from recorded or broadcast songs, from a formal occasions, from an advice
of a doctor, or from anything you heard that you feel this. You will be writing this in a ¼ sheet of
paper, and will drop it in a magic box on my table. Don‟t forget to write your names and section. We
will be using this for the next meeting.

Explanation of AHA! Moment: Most of us are familiar with the distinctive feeling of having an
"Aha!" moment. Suddenly, in a flash of insight, a puzzling problem that was difficult to solve
makes perfect sense as all the pieces fall into place. Aha-moment solutions can be rewarding and
tend to feel good.

5. APPLICATION (20 minutes)

“Think, Write and Sing”

What to Do: The teacher will read aloud the instructions using a lapel.

Instructions: The students will be grouped into five (5) groups. The students are assigned
to create a poem with or without a rhyme. The poem will be at least 3-5 stanzas and 4
lines in each stanza. The poem should be in English language only. After creating a
poem, the students will integrate it into a song and will perform it in from of the class.
