ACTIVITY 2
TYPES OF INTERMOLECULAR FORCES
I. Objective
At the end of the activity, the students should be able to describe the
different types of intermolecular forces.
II. Materials
alcohol, beaker (if not available, plastic cup), graduated cylinder (if not
available, any measuring device e.g., dropper, measuring cup, etc.), newspaper,
paper clips, water
III. Activity Proper
1. Wear your laboratory gown and set up your old newspaper and plastic cover.
A. Alcohol and water-hydrogen bonding
1. Measure out 20 mL of water and 20 mL alcohol in separate 100 mL
graduated cylinder. Check that the measurements are accurate.
2. Mix the alcohol into the water. Measure.
B. Surface Tension
1. Guess how many paper clips the water can take to raise the volume of
water without spilling out.
2. Fill a beaker to the brim with water without spilling.
3. Add paper clips into the water.
4. Count how many paper clips can be added without the water spilling out.
5. Create a “boat” using a bent paper clip with a small piece of paper
attached to it to serve as a mast.
6. Gently suspend it on top of the liquid. Observe.
7. Answer the guide question.
IV. Guide Questions
1. What are your expectations when you mix the alcohol into the water?
i proposed that when i mix alcohol into the water it will mix since alcohol is a polar
solvent.water molecules and alcohol molecules attract each other. Therefore, when
alcohol is added to water, the molecules are attracted to each other and a solution of
alcohol in water forms.

2. What happened when you mix the alcohol into the water? What is its final
volume (mL)?

__as i proposed the alcohol and water mixed together and the volume is the same
as what i think it would be, which is 40ml
3. Why do you think there is a discrepancy in the expected final volume and actual
final volume of the mixture?
In my opinion it is because both have different density one of the possible reason
that can change the expected volume when it mixes
4.Is your expected number of paper the same to the actual number clips needed to
raise the volume of water without spilling out?
no, it’s not the same. it actually requires more paperclip than expected
5. What happened when you gently suspend the boat on the top of the water? Why
do you think so?
when i gently suspend the boat on the top of the water, the the boat sinked, it’s
because the paper absorbed water making it heavier and at the same time making
it as one with the water
