Reservoirs
Purpose: to stabilize the flow of water in order to satisfy a
varying demand from consumers .
Investigation of reservoir sites:
During Investigation of reservoir sites consideration must be given to
the:
- climatic, topographical and geological conditions
- rainfall, runoff, infiltration and Evapo-transpiration which occurs in
the catchments area.
4
Two other factors have to be taken in to consideration:
- The water tightness of the basin and
- Bank stability
• Apart from the conditions in the immediate vicinity of the dam, the
two factors which determine the retention of water in reservoir
basins are:
- the piezometeric conditions in and
Exclusions:
– Cut of trenches
– Grouting
– Impervious lining – Asphalt membrane
– Clay blankets
Grouting:
– Curtain grouting
– Consolidation grouting
Grouting
The purposes of Grouting of rock foundations and reservoir areas are:
1. for tightening rock foundation to prevent leakage and reduce uplift and
• Hydropower generation
• flood mitigation
• Recreation
Dams cont...

Constituent Materials of Concrete
1. Cement:
Ordinary Portland cement is not recommended in dam
construction.
3. Water:
– Water for use in concrete should be;
– free of undesirable chemical contamination, including organic
contaminates.
– A general standard is that the water should fit for human consumption.
4. Admixtures:
Air entraining agent, (AEA) is added to the concrete which helps in
reducing the water contents, and handling becomes easy.
They are also effective in delaying setting time under conditions of high
ambient temperatures.
Concrete mix parameter:
The parameters which are principally responsible for controlling the
properties of concrete manufactured with specific cement and
aggregates are
- cement content, C (kg/m3);
- water content, w (kg/m3)and
- Aggregate, A (kg/m3)
water: cement: aggregate ratio (by weight/volume)
• Concrete lifts are normally formed in at least two layers, and compacted
by poker vibrators.
• PP are laid between 1.0 to 1.5m interval in the lifts and ice
cooled water (3-40C) is circulated through the pipes.
Construction of Embankment Dams:
The construction operations of embankment dams fall in to
four principal groups relating to:
1. Material source development:
– opening out of borrow areas or quarries,
– installation of fixed plants,
– e.g. crushers and conveyors,
– construction of access and haulage roads etc.
– compaction.
– stilling basins,
– outlet works.
