Chapter 6 Communicating with the Person

1. Body language – messages sent through facial expressions, gestures, posture, hand and body
movements, gait, eye contact, and appearance
2. Comatose – being unable to respond to stimuli; unconscious
3. Communication – the exchange of information – a message sent is received and correctly interpreted
by the intended persons
4. Culture– the characteristics of a group of people – language, values, beliefs, habits, likes, dislikes,
customs – passed from1 generation to the next
5. Disability – any lost, absent, or impaired physical or mental function
6. Esteem – the worth, value, or opinion one has of a person
7. Gender identity– a person’s sense or feelings of being male, female, a combination of male an female,
or neither male nor female
8. Holism – a concept that considers the whole person; the whole person has physical, psychological,
social and spiritual parts that are woven together and cannot be separate.
9. Need – something necessary or desired for maintaining life and mental well-being
10. Nonverbal communication- communication that does not use words
11. Paraphrasing – re-stating the person’s message in your own words
12. Religion – spiritual beliefs, needs, and practices
13. Risk Factor – something that increased the chance of illness or injury
14. Self-esteem – thinking well of oneself and seeing oneself as useful and having value
15. Verbal communication – communication that uses written or spoken words
