Socialization

- Enculturation or socialization is often defined as the lifelong process of experiencing,

learning, imbibing, and transmitting culture. Essentially, it is the process that shapes an
individual’s membership in his/her society, enabling to learn and eventually or
expectedly mirror the latter’s prevailing norms and values.
- Enculturation is the lifelong process of experiencing, learning, imbibing, and
transmitting culture to shape an individual's membership in society.

Values
- Values are a society's defined set of what is good and desirable, which can be intrinsic
or extrinsic. Lau and Chan (2021) define values as standards or ideals with which we
evaluate actions, people, things, or situations. They identify three kinds of values:
personal, moral, and aesthetic. Personal values are those endorsed by an individual,
while moral values are those that help determine what is morally right or wrong. Finally,
aesthetic values are those associated with the evaluation of artwork or beauty.
- Values are standards or ideals with which we evaluate actions, people, things, or
situations.

Norms
- Norms are rules and expectations that guide the individual's behavior on their society,
while mores go against social/societal taboos. Sanchez (c.2021) identifies sample
"violations" of each such as chewing loudly, burping without saying "excuse me" and
wearing white in funerals.
- Norms are rules and expectations, while mores go against social/societal taboos.

Status
- Status is a social position in any given society, and a role is the part our society expects
us to play in a given status. For example, Filipino fathers and mothers take on traditional
roles in the home, with fathers being providers and protectors and mothers taking on the
tasks of childrearing, discipline, and managing the home. In some traditional Filipino
families, siblings are expected to help their siblings finish their studies and take care of
their elderly parents.
- Role is a social position in a society, with Filipino fathers and mothers taking on
traditional roles in the home, such as childrearing, discipline, and managing the
home.

Roles
- Enculturation/socialization is the process whereby individuals learn their group's culture
through experience, observation, and instruction. It starts from childhood and progresses
from then on, with different dimensions such as adults, language, and meaning
construction playing a role. One's learning environment and community shape one's
enculturation as one learns to imbibe society's values and norms while forming their own
distinct identity.
- Enculturation/socialization is the process of learning a culture through
experience, observation, and instruction.
