Law Student Batch 2021 at
University of Gadjah Mada

Ever since I was in my senior year of high school, I’m always interested to become a lawyer.
As said by Hotman Paris in one of his seminar, in order to become a successful lawyer, we
must have two qualities, which is knowledge of law and able to practice law using legal
English. My ambition to obtain those two qualities lead me to participate in IHL Moot Court
Competition selection.

From my understanding, In international humanitarian law court there are two sides,
prosecutor side and defendant side. Both party will try their best to convince the judges on
who should win the case. The prosecutor side will try their best to prove that the accused is
guilty of all charges, meanwhile the defendant will try their best to prove that they didn’t act
as the prosecutor charged using their interpretation of the law and finding loopholes. Those
actions is similar to how Indonesian court work. By being in IHL Moot Court Competition I
will learn on how to argue about proof of element that stated in the law in pleading session
that will surely translate to my litigation skill. Moreover, I will also learn more about law
interpretation, a skill that every law student and practice needs. In IHL, I will be doing that all
in English which will help me understand legal English

Since I enter faculty of law, I try to participate in academic competition. I have joined few
competitions in my 1 year life as a UGM student. I participated in two law debate
competition. I was a delegate for Speciality in Formasi Law Fair as 2 nd speaker where my
team and I managed to got 2nd best rank in nomination round and past quarterfinal round. I
also was a delegate for Speciality UII Law Fair as 1 st speaker. After UII Law Fair, I wanted to
try something new and became delegate for ALSA LC UGM in PDFH XVI Moot Court
Competition. I became a prosecutor in memo round. On that period of time, I learn on how to
interpretate law in a way that will benefit us to proof that the accused is guilty by proofing
that they fulfil all the criteria of element in law that they break. In pleading round, I became a
defendant and learn on how to persuade the judges that my client did nothing wrong by
proofing that they didn’t commit those illegal action by using interpretation of law and
mastering knowledge of facts on the field. In the end My team won 2 nd place and my partner
and i won best defendant/legal counsel. With my current knowledge of debate, research,
proof, and law interpretation, I think I am ready to enter the bigger stage which is
international moot court competition and what better moot court competition to enter other
than IHL MCC.

I strongly believe that my application to become a delegate for CIMC in IHL Moot Court will
help me to achieve my dream future. Either it will help me learn knowledge of law and make
a persuading argument, make my CV more appealing, and acquire relation. If I were selected
to be one of the delegates, I would definitely put in my greatest effort to achive the maximum
result that me and my team could get.
