CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS

Mayfield is a former railway

station near Manchester
Piccadilly Station in Manchester,
England, on the south side of
Fairfield Road. Opened in 1910,
Mayfield was built to alleviate
overcrowding as a four platform
relief station adjacent to Piccadilly.
The station was opened to
passengers in 1960, and all
services were permanently closed
in 1986.
This region has been lost and
suffered from a lack of
operation and development for
many years.

Transport and Access
This survey explores the movement and transportation across the site to understand how the site is used. Mayfield Depot is quite apparent but rarely used as people only use the site as a
convenient route through the city and a crossing over the Piccadilly Railway station. Nonetheless, the area of Mayfield is easily accessible as you can get there by train, bus, car, bicycle and foot.

‘‘The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the sense’’

Juhani Pallasmaa
“I dwell in the city and the city dwells in me,” Words by Pallasmaa
in his book. The writer gives an approach that the ultimate
meaning of any building is beyond architecture. This guides
consciousness back to the world and to the sense of making us
feel like full embodied and spiritual beings. Pallasma argues for a
holistic architecture that spaces that not only impacts how
spaces look but how they feel giving an important impact on the
five senses. Also explains how there is a dominance in the sense
of vision and how the other senses are minimised.

‘‘Peripheral vision integrates us with space while focused

vision pushes us out of the space making us mere spectators’’
(J. Pallasmaa 2012, p.15)

My ideas became strong in maximising each sense in a different

space and my goal is to reach a dialogue between the building and
it’s users as the building is imitating the human perception.

Elevator Pitch

Hello, My name is Damjan Zhupanoski. I am

completing my degree in Manchester School of
Architecture. I am interested in the project
questioning the blindspot in Mayfield. In my
point of view, most people such as students and
workers pass through Mayfield without
noticing it. I have an idea that will change all of
this. I want to make a space seen and
attracted by the public, where every pedestrian
would stop, enter inside, get surprised
(an Idea of Maximising each sense in a different
space because Architecture is a multi-sensory
space.), get a feeling as they are on a journey,
enjoy the new environment and leave with
different mindset. My plan is to bring up May-
field by creating Life on top of the
Warehouse.

areas, entrances and circulation routes are orientated
towards the central atrium which allows for complete
oversight from the main desk while maintaining visual
relation between all floors. This core brings light to
all the structure.

Alberto Campo Baeza, Museum of Memory

The building is the work of the architect Alberto Campo Baeza, who is additionally the creator
of the Caja Granada 3d shape. He had motivation from the penguin pool in London Zoo and the
floor arrange of the Royal residence of Charles V.

In this building Everything is arranged around a central courtyard, an eliptic form through which
circular ramp rises, connecting the three levels and creating interesting spacial tensions.
An inspiration of spreading my design into a wider area forming space for a ramp around the
formed atrium.
