MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY

Maria takes her exam last semester. After one week, her teacher announces the scores
of every subject. Her scores were 49, 35, 31, 47, 32, 49, 22.
Find the MEAN, MEDIAN and MODE of the data given.

Mean = ∑x/n

49+35+31+47+32+49+22= 265/7= 37.86

Median

49, 35, 31, 47, 32, 49, 22

The data contains 7 numbers, therefore the median will be in the 4th place which is the
47.

Mode

49, 35, 31, 47, 32, 49, 22

The number 49 occurs twice therefore the mode of the data is 49.

MEASURES OF DISPERSION

Find the variance, range and standard deviation of the wages of 9 workers given
below: 310, 290, 320, 280, 300, 290, 320, 310, 280.

Range

The greatest number is 320 while the least number is 280. Therefore the range is 40.

Standard Deviation

x̅= 280+280+290+290+300+310+310+320+320/9
= 2700/9= 300

x x-x̅ (x-x̅) ².
280 280-300= -20 400
280 280-300= -20 400
290 290-300= -10 100
290 290-300= -10 100
300 300-300= 0 0
310 310-300= 10 100
310 310-300= 10 100
320 320-300= 20 400
320 320-300= 20 400

Sum of the Squared Deviation is 2000

Variance

2000/9= 222.22

Standard Deviation

√222.22= 14.91

MEASURES OF RELATIVE POSITION

The scores for student are 40, 45, 49, 53, 61, 65, 71, 79, 85, 91. What is the percentile
for score 71?

Percentile of score 71= (6/10) x 100

= 0.6 x 100
Percentile of score 71 = 60

The socre 71 is in the 60th percentile.
