Leachate:
Percolating water that flows through solid waste, gets contaminated, and then flows out
from the material is called leachate.
Leachate is found at the bottom of the hazardous landfills under normal conditions. The
downward movement and lateral movement of leachate occurs through the underlying
strata.

The waste which is placed in the landfill may undergo different changes such as physical,
chemical and biological. Due to some conditions like rainfall, drainage, and groundwater,
the water interacts with the decomposed waste and chemical and biological constituents
get dissolved in the water, forming leachate.

Leachate percolates the underlying soil strata of the landfill. The dissolved and suspended
chemical and biological constituents in the leachate are removed by filtering action of the
soli strata.
