Set A
(1) Find a basis for the subspace of R5 that is spanned by the vectors (1, −2, 0, 0, 3),
(2, −5, −3, −2, 6), (0, 5, 15, 10, 0), (2, 6, 18, 8, 6).

(2) If the vectors (0, 1, α), (1, α, 1), (α, 1, 0) of the vector space R3 are linearly dependent,
then find the value of α.

(3) Whether the vectors (1, 1, 2, 4), (2, −1, −5, 2), (1, −1, −4, 0), (2, 1, 1, 6) are linearly inde-
pendent vectors of R4 ? Justify your answer.

(4) Determine which of the following sets of vectors form a basis for R3 ? Justify your answer.
(i) {(−1, 0, 0), (1, 1, 1)}
(ii) {(0, 0, 0), (0, 1, 2), (1, 1, 1), (1, 2, 3)}
(iii) {(1, 1, 1), (2, 2, 2), (3, 3, 3)}

(5) Let W be the subspace of R5 defined by W = {(x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 , x5 ) ∈ R5 : x1 = 5x4 , x5 =


2x2 } find a basis and dimension of W .

(6) Find a basis and dimension of the following subspaces of Mn,n :


(i) The set of symmetric matrices (ii) The set of diagonal matrices

(7) Determine whether each statement is true or false with justification.


(i) A set of vectors {v1 , v2 , . . . , vk } in a vector space is called linearly dependent if the
vector equation c1 v1 + c2 v2 + · · · + ck vk = 0 has only the trivial solution.
(ii) Two vectors and in a vector space are linearly dependent if and only if one is a
scalar multiple of the other.
(iii) A set is {v1 , v2 , . . . , vk }, k ≥ 2 linearly independent if and only if at least one of the
vectors can be written as a linear combination of the other vectors.
(iv) If a subset S spans a vector space V, then every vector in V can be written as a
linear combination of the vectors in S.
(v) If an m × n matrix A is row-equivalent to an m × n matrix B, then the row space
of A is equivalent to that of B.

(1) Show that the vectors v1 = (1, 0, −1), v2 = (1, 2, 1), v3 = (0, −3, 2) form a basis for R3 .
Find the components of (1, 0, 0) with respect to the basis (v1 , v2 , v3 ).

(2) For which values of t, the set {(t, 1, 1), (1, t, 1), (1, 1, t)} is linearly independent?

(3) Show that the set {1, x, x2 , . . . , xn } is a linearly independent set in Pn .

(4) Determine which of the following sets of vectors form a basis for R2 ? Justify your answer.
(i) {(−1, 0), (1, 1)}
(ii) {(0, 0), (1, 1)}
(iii) {(1, 1), (2, 2)}

(5) Let W = {(x1 , x2 , . . . , x2022 ) ∈ R2022 : x1 + x2 + · · · + x2022 = 0}. Then show that W is
subspace of vector space R2022 , and find its dimension.

(6) Find a basis and dimension of the following subspaces of Mn,n :


(i) The set of skew-symmetric matrices (ii) The set of upper triangular matrices

(3) Prove that vectors (a, b) and (c, d) in R2 are linearly independent if and only if ad−bc ̸= 0.

(4) Determine which of the following sets of vectors form a basis for R2 ? Justify your answer.
(i) {(−1, 0), (1, 1)}
(ii) {(0, 0), (1, 1)}
(iii) {(1, 1), (2, 2)}

(5) Find a basis for subspace W = {(2s − t, s, t, s) : s and t are real numbers} of R4 . Also
find its dimension.

(i) The set of lower triangular matrices (ii) The set of matrices with trace 0

(7) Determine whether each statement is true or false with justification.
