cm2 and whose height is 7 cm. What is the volume of the pyramid?

2. The diagram shows a cone of height 8 units and base radius 6 units.
What is the surface area of its side?
PYRAMID AND CONE

OVERVIEW/INTRODUCTION:

We will examine the 3-dimensional objects known as Pyramid and Cone. And how
to develop the formula of the volume and surface areas of a pyramid and cone. These
solids differ from prism in that they do not have uniform cross section.

LESSON PROPER:

PYRAMID

Pyramid is a solid with a polygon base and triangular lateral faces that meet in a vertex.
Pyramids are named by their base shape.
A 3-dimensional solid in which the base is a polygon and the sides are triangles
which meet in one point called the vertex. We shall examine regular pyramids in which
the base is a regular polygon and the sides are congruent triangles.

Types of Pyramid

A pyramid is made by connecting a base to an apex

The base is a polygon (flat with straight edges) and all other faces are triangles. No
curves!

Notes On Surface Area

The Surface Area has two parts: the area of the base (the Base Area), and the area of
the side faces (the Lateral Area).
For Base Area :
It depends on the shape, there are different formulas for triangle, square, etc.
For Lateral Area :
When all the side faces are the same:

 Multiply the perimeter by the "slant length" and divide by 2. This is because the
side faces are always triangles and the triangle formula is "base times height
divided by 2"

But when the side faces are different (such as an "irregular" pyramid) we must add up
the area of each triangle to find the total lateral area.

Example:

The area of the base of the pyramid below is 40 cm2. What is the volume of the
pyramid?

1 1
𝑉= (𝐴𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝐻 ) = (40)(6) = 𝟖𝟎 𝒄𝒎𝟑
3 3

Example:

Find the total surface area of a regular pyramid with a square base if each edge of the
base measures 16 inches, the slant height of a side is 17 inches and the altitude
is 15 inches.

The perimeter of the base is 4s since it is a square.

𝑝 = 4(16) = 64 𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠
2
The area of the base is 𝑠
𝑏 = 162 = 256 𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠 2
1
Total Surface area is 𝑇𝑆𝐴 = 𝐴𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 + (𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟)(𝑠𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑡 ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡)
2
1
𝑇𝑆𝐴 = 256 + (64)(17) = 𝟖𝟎𝟎 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔

PYRAMID AND CONE

CONE

A cone is a solid figure generated by a line, one end of which is fixed and the
other end describes a closed curve in a plane.

 It has a circle at one end

 And a point at the other end
 And a curved side
 It is not a polyhedron as it has a curved surface
 The pointy end of a cone is called the apex
 The flat part is the base
