DOVE EVOLUTION

The “Dove Evolution” commercial video shows that a model’s photo was being
photoshopped for commercial. People often compare themselves to images of
models, actors and singers in the media however we never know if these images are
real. With clever lighting, make –up and Photoshop, it’s possible to transform an
image so it no longer reflects the features of the original model. I believe that the
advertisers are expecting the target audiences to focus on looking at the beautiful
features portrayed by the model. However, the image from the real model is not the
same after it was photoshopped. In my opinion, the influence of media has created a
distortion towards beauty and impact the individuals’ self-esteem in a long term.
Therefore, I think everybody is beautiful no matter who they are and do not let the
media to fool them into something that they are not. Parents should also discuss and
educate about this matter with their children so that their children will always love
themselves and not to be manipulated by the media.

SLOB EVOLUTION

A “Slob Evolution” is a parody of Dove’s beauty evolution video. The video shows the
transformation from normal man to slob for the sake of advertising. From the
advertisement, the man is pampered with glass after glass of beers, more alcohol,
countless cigarettes and a range of fast food. Finally, when the man’s face has
thickened out, the Photoshop artists started to shorten the neck and increase the
hunch. In my opinion, this video illustrates how the media corporation has distorted
our perception of real life. Finally, the parody video went viral and was seen by Dove.
Dove was not upset, but flattered by it as that seems to be the healthy attitude for a
brand.

The “United Breaks Guitar” is a song title written by Dave Caroll. The reason he
wrote the song was because the United Airlines has thrown and broke his guitar
when he has just landed at the Chicago O’Hare airport. Dave Caroll filed a claim
however he failed as the United Airlines told him that it was ineligible for
compensation because he had failed to make a claim within 24-hour. Finally, the
song uploaded in Youtube went viral and has humiliated the United Airlines.

The impact of the music video has cost the United Airlines $180 million. This prove
that the impact of bad public relations could also effect on people’s decision in
choosing an airline. Attempting to put a positive manner on the incident and the
song, the United’s managing director called Dave Caroll to apologize regarding on
the incident and to ask for permission to use the video for internal training. The
United claimed that it hopes to learn from the incident, and to change its customer
service policy accordingly.
