STEP BY STEPS BVS

In this document, you will find the following step by steps:

▪ How to create a route?

▪ How to optimize a route?

▪ How to request a weather forecast report?

Step by step
BVS - How to create a route ? (1/3) Software

: All : 10 mins : 1 hour

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STEP BY STEP ?

This step by step shows how to create a route with Bon Voyage System taking into account the weather
conditions. Multiple ways to create a route:
▪ Start from scratch initializing waypoints manually. We will focus on this option for this step by step.
▪ Import from an existing track.
▪ Import directly from V2PS or an ECDIS track.

01 Initialize waypoints manually.

Go to File. Right clicking, select “New Track” and fill a track name. Approximatively,
choose the departure port name and destination port name with the mouse on the
chart. You can see the two waypoints, displayed on the “Route Input” tab.
Then, the track needs to be adjusted considering the weather and motion conditions
(i.e., risk of collision with shore). Right click and select “Insert waypoint” as many as
you need.

02 Introduce in the “Route Input” tab, the ETD, ETA and drafts, clicking on the
departure and destination time function.

03 Introduce in the ”Snap Shot” tab, the Natural Roll Period given by loading
program (MACS3) and resonance alerts thresholds values as per your
vessel's size.

04
Check voyage details and information
Finally, the BVS calculates the Calm Sea Speed required for the specified
ETA, considering the weather and current factors during the voyage. For
information purposes, you can retrieve the details of this track below in the
“Voyage Details” tab.

Caution: Check if there is no resonance alerts along the route (synchronous and parametric rolling,
surfing/breaching) and ship is not entering in rogue waves high probability areas.

Step by step
BVS - How to optimize a route ? Software

: All : 5 mins : 5 min

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STEP BY STEP ?

This step by step shows you how to optimize a route. BVS has an improved optimization algorithm that
finds the least cost route for fixed speed or fixed arrival based on the effects of the winds, waves and currents.

01 Route optimization options

BVS is providing the possibility to optimize your route based on three options:
• Least Time: Generates an optimized route with best ETA option.
• Least Cost/Fuel (recommended option): Considers fuel cost (or fuel
consumption when cost is not defined) to create an optimized route
• Least Cost/Fuel Fixed arrival: Requires setting an arrival ETA at the end
point of optimization.
The optimized route is calculated by pressing the Route Optimizing
button situated on the right part of the screen.

02 This route will appear afterwards on the map and route details are shown in the
track list tab, which allow easy comparison (time, distance, fuel).

The start / end points for optimizing the route can be different from the voyage
departure / arrival ports. Route optimizing can be performed anytime, by right
clicking on the points, choose Optimize, Set begin point, then Set end
point, after that pressing the Route Optimizing button.

BVS - How to request a weather forecast report ? (1/4) Software

: All : 15 mins : 15 mins

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STEP BY STEP ?

This step by step shows how to request a weather forecast data report.

01 Click on “Data” tab, then “Weather data delivery configuration” tab. A

pop-up box opens and consists of a series of tabs for configuring your specific
data needs.

02 Using “Main Area” tab should be selected the coordinates of main area and
the number of forecast days to receive, ranging from 1 to 16 days, which is
controlled by red slider bar.

Contact: raise an EUP ticket, following the “EUP support process”.

03 High-resolution area can be selected from “High-Res” tab by introducing the

coordinates manually or adjusting the transparent zone with the mouse.

04 Select the minimum parameters that you want include considering the weather
forecast data, in the “Item Select” tab.

05 Satellite image area can be selected by inserting coordinates in “Satellite Image” tab.

06 The “Port Vicinity Fcst” tab configures a list of weather bulletin for filled
specific ports.
Scheduled or continuous delivery can be set and a maximum of 10 ports can
be selected.
Also, set the function “use active track” and you will receive for 5 days
(before/after your arrival in each port) port forecast for your active route.

07 Using the “Delivery Schedule” tab, the delivery dates and times can be selected.
The Delivery dates can be continuous or until a selected date. Special updates
regarding Tropical, if choose, will be received once they become available.
4 times/day delivery should be selected to monitor weather conditions and
resonance risk detection.

08 At the end of Weather Data Delivery Configuration, the Summary tab is

displayed, containing all the selected parameters. By clicking Finish, a new
email is automatically created (if option chosen) containing an attached
file with all these details to be sent to BVS. Otherwise, the vessel will
request permanently this report via a broadband (internet) connection.
