TUTORIAL SHEET – 10

Free Convection

Free Convection from Plates

1) A vertical plate 30cm high and 1m wide and maintained at a uniform temperature of 1200C is
exposed to quiescent air 300C. Calculate the average heat transfer coefficient and the total heat
transfer rate from the plate to air.

2) An electrically heated vertical plate of size 25cmX 25cm is insulated on one side and
dissipates heat from other surface at a constant rate of 600W/m2 by free convection to the
surrounding air at 300C. Determine the average surface temperature of the plate.

3) A plate of size 30cmX 100cm is oriented horizontally in atmosphere at 300C. If the surface
temperature of the plate is 1200C, determine the total heat transfer rate from the plate to the
surroundings.

Free Convection from Cylinder

1) A 50mm diameter, 1.5m long tube has a uniform temperature 1000C. The tube is exposed to
ambient air, which is at a uniform temperature of 200C. Calculate the rate of heat transfer (free
convection) rate if the tube is kept vertical and horizontal.

2) A horizontal electric cable of 25mm diameter has a heat dissipation rate of 30W/m. If the
ambient air temperature is 270C, estimate the surface temperature of the cable.

3) An electric immersion heater, 10mm in diameter and 300mm long is rated at 550W. If the
heater is horizontally positioned in a large tank of water at 200C, estimate its surface
temperature. What would be its surface temperature if the heater is accidentally operated in air.
