Problem 4.16 For the circuit of Fig. P4.

15, what should the resistance value of RL

be so as to have maximum transfer of power into it?

ip Vcc = 6 V
vs‘
+ vo 4 kΩ vL
_
5 kΩ 70 kΩ
20 kΩ RL
vs 10 kΩ

Figure P4.15: Circuit for Problems 4.15 and 4.16.

Solution: We seek to find the Thévenin circuit as seen by RL . With RL removed, we

need to find the open-circuit voltage voc :

ip Vcc = 6 V
vs‘
+ vo 4 kΩ
_
5 kΩ 70 kΩ +
20 kΩ voc
vs 10 kΩ _

Since there is no voltage drop across the 4-kΩ resistor,

voc = vo .

At the input side, in view of ip = 0, voltage division gives:

vs × 20k
v!s = = 0.8vs .
(5 + 20)k

As a noninverting amplifier,

(70 + 10)k !
vo = vs = 8v!s = 8 × 0.8vs = 6.4vs .
10k
Hence,
vTh = voc = vo = 6.4vs .
Next, we seek to find RTh by calculating the short-circuit current at the output.
Replacing RL with a short circuit, the current through it is simply
vo vTh
isc = = .
4 kΩ 4 kΩ
Hence,
voc
RTh = = 4 kΩ.
isc
To maximize power transfer into RL , its value should be 4 kΩ.
