Introduction
The Gregorian Calendar is the calendar used in most nations of the world. It
was introduced in October 1582 by Pope Gregory Xll as a minor modification of
the Julian Calendar. It is composed of twelve months that begins in January
and ends in December. This is the main reason why the whole world
simultaneously celebrate Christmas every December 25 and the New Year
every First Day of January
At this point in time , the Year 2021 is almost ending and another Year is
coming which the whole world is anticipating with great Jubilee and so much
expectations

On the other hand, the Roman Catholic Church has its own Official Calendar
which we call the Liturgical Year or Liturgical Calendar. It is composed of
Five Seasons that rotates in a Cycle beginning from the Season of Advent and
ends during the Solemn Feast of Christ the King which is celebrated during the
Last Sunday of November. This is a movable Feast. Once the Advent Season
begins ,the Roman Catholic Church celebrates its New Year much earlier

than the Gregorian Calendar. Right now, the Roman Catholic Church is

THE ADVENT WREATH
What is Advent?

The word Advent came from the Latin word “Adventus”,meaning coming. It is
a Season of Joyful waiting for the coming Birth of Jesus, our Savior. It is a
celebration of the past, the present and the future. Advent is related to our
past, present and future life .Advent challenges us ,who are living in the present
to be vigilant , alert and ready to meet the Lord Jesus when He comes .
One of the beautiful symbols of Advent is the Advent wreath or Advent Crown

What is the Advent Wreath ?

The Advent wreath is a popular custom that originated in Germany in the
16th Century. It consists of an evergreen wreath and four candles
( traditonally, three purple, representing Penance and one pink rose ,
representing Joy). Each one of these candles is lit every night during the
Advent Season from the First Sunday down to the Fourth Sunday of Advent.
The lighting of a candle is usually accompanied by a Bible reading, devotional
time and prayers. The Advent Wreath is usually present in many churches and
homes during Advent and is very symbolic of several aspects of Advent and
Christmas Seasons.

What does the Advent wreath symbolize?

The wreath and candles are full of symbolisms connected to the Christmas
Season. The wreath itself, which is made of various evergreens,
signifies continuous life. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or
end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the
everlasting life we find in Christ.

What do the 4 candles of Advent represent in order?

The four Sundays preceding Christmas, which is when Christians celebrate the
Birth of Jesus Christ, are recognized for four virtues. The candles on the
Advent wreath symbolize Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. The candles are lit in
that order, beginning the First Sunday of Advent. The flames of the candles
remind us that Jesus is the “Light of the world”

Symbolisms and Meanings of the Advent Candles

The FIRST CANDLE symbolizes HOPE and is called the "Prophets’ Candle."
 The prophets helped us renew our Faith and remind us of what may be.

The SECOND CANDLE symbolizes PEACE and is  called the “Shepherds’
Candle “
 The Shepherds were the first visitors of the Baby Jesus on the night He
was born in Betlehem. They were the Agents of the Gospel to the world.
The THIRD CANDLE symbolizes JOY and is called as “ Mary’s Candle”
 Mary is the Mother of the Son of God. She was the bearer of Jesus, our
Savior. Mary bore Jesus in her womb with so much Joy .

The FOURTH CANDLE symbolizes LOVE and is called “ St. Joseph’s Candle”
 St. Joseph is the Foster Father of Jesus. He was a just and holy man.He
was the one who knocked at the doors of the inns in Bethlehem during
that cold wind of December to be able to give Mary a decent place where
she can give birth to Jesus, the Son of God. But sad to say all of them
were full. Instead they found a poor stable and it was in this very humble
lodging that the Son of God ,owner of the whole Universe was born.

CHRISTMAS, THE BIRTH OF JESUS,SAVIOR OF THE WORLD

What is Christmas?
Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the Solemn Birth of Jesus
Christ, the Savior of the World. At Jesus’ Birth ,a Choir of Angels sang “Glory
to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of Goodwill”

“Glory to God in the highest “means exaltation, praise or honor as accorded

by general consent.

Christmas is observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural

celebration being simultaneously celebrated with great Jubilee among billions
of people around the world. The said celebration includes: gift-giving, family
reunions, social gatherings, feasting, symbolic decorations, etc. In the
Philippines,we take pride in having ” the longest Christmas Celebration “ with
the start of the “ber” months.
Christmas Season also includes the Feasts of Jesus” childhood namely: His
circumcission; the Epiphany, which is the Manifestation of Jesus to the world
through the Magi or popularly called “The Three Kings ”; the Baptism of Jesus
and His Presentation in the Temple in Jerusalem.

Most Common Christmas Symbols :

Symbolism of the Shepherds in the Christmas Story

The Angel Gabriel told the Shepherds about

the Birth of Jesus. They demonstrated an
eagerness to embrace the Good News
brought by Angel Gabriel. Immediately they
hurried to find Jesus. They were the First
Visitors of the Baby Jesus on the night He
was born. Then, they spread the Good News
about Him, and they glorified and praised
God.They were the Agents of the Gospel to
the world

Symbolism of the Christmas Tree

In Christianity, the Christmas Tree is symbolic

of  the birth and resurrection of Jesus.
The tree's branches and shrubs are viewed
as a sign of immortality and are said to
symbolize the crown of thorns worn by Christ

on the cross.

Symbolism of Santa Claus

The image of Santa Claus, has its religious
origins in the third century. An example of
Santa Claus is the person to whom you write
a wish list for Christmas. Christmas is a time
of giving gifts, social gatherings, feasting and
family reunions and Santa Claus stands for all
these things. He is truly the Spirit of Christmas.

Symbolism of placing an Angel on top of a Christmas Tree

Because Angels appeared high in the sky on the

First Christmas, people began placing angels
high on the top of their Christmas trees
as a way to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It is
said that the very first images of angels placed
on top of Christmas trees were homemade
ornaments ( usually made from natural materials
that were inexpensive like straw. )

Symbolism of Angels at Jesus’ Birth

Angels are traditionally placed at the top of

Christmas trees to represent their role at
the birth of Jesus.Based on the Biblical Story
of the First Christmas there were several angels
that appeared on the night of Jesus’ Birth in
Betlehem. Gabriel, the Archangel of Revelations
informs the Virgin Mary that she was chosen by
God from among all women on earth to become
the Mother of Jesus, the Son of God.

Symbolism of Christmas Gifts

Christmas Gifts remind us of God giving us His

Greatest Gift which is no other than His Beloved
Son, Jesus.Giving gifts on Christmas is meant to
be a symbol of love, kindness, and remembrance
of the Gift of Eternal Life made possible for us
by Jesus,our Savior.

Christmas Tree symbolizes  the star of
Bethlehem which according to the Biblical
story, guided the three kings,or wise men,
to the Baby Jesus. The star is also the
heavenly sign of a prophecy fulfilled long ago
and the shining hope for humanity.

Symbolism of the Three Kings at Jesus’ Birth

traveled for 12 days following a star in the
desert that led them to the Baby Jesus in the
