The Liturgical Year of the Roman Catholic Church is often referred to as the
Year of Grace, meaning that the people should celebrate their unbounded
Love of God at all times in all places. The year begins with the First Sunday of
Advent, followed by the Christmas Season, the Ordinary Time, the Lenten
Season, and the Easter Season including Solemn Feasts that includeAscension
Sunday,Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi .
Last March 2, 2022, the Roman Catholic Church started the Season of Lent
with the Imposition of Ashes upon the forehead of every Christian believer
reminding them that they are dust and to dust they will return. It also remind

What’s New
F
The Catholic Church historically observes the disciplines of Fasting and
Abstinence at various times of the year. For Catholics, Fasting is the
reduction of one’s intake of food. Persons aged 14-59 are obliged to have
only one full meal every Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Advent and
Lent. Whereas children below 13 and all elderly from 60 years old above
are exempted from fasting. Abstinence on the other hand, means refraining
from eating meat on the days appointed for abstinence.
Children can still observe fasting and abstinence by avoiding playing
computer games until late at night, watching television the whole day
long to save electricity,to give more time in their studies and to become
more obedient to the elderly in imitation of Jesus’ obedience to the Will
of His Heavenly Father. The elderly can devote some of their time in
praying constantly for world peace, for the conversion of sinners and
most especially for the good health of the Holy Father and for the
success of all his monthly intentions.

Perform some acts of almsgiving.
Let’s Begin
Have you ever experienced being approached by a poor child or by a beggar along
the way you were passing by? What have you done ? Why did you do it? Was it
right to do it? Our lesson for today is about helping others through the spirit of
almsgiving.
What’s New
Giving alms is one of the Pillars of Lent and an ancient/old practice in the
Church. In the Bible, Tobit instructed his son to give alms from his own
Possessions.” Do not turn away your face from the poor and God’s face
will not be turned away from you.”
Jesus Himself is our example on how we can love others.
To love like Jesus is to love and serve our neighbor without asking anything
in return. There are two concrete ways by which we can be like Jesus–the
Corporal Works of Mercy and the Spiritual Worksof Mercy.
Works of Mercy also known as Acts of Mercy are practices which are
considered meritorious in Christian ethics. The practice is very popular in
the Catholic Church as an act of both penance and charity. The Works of
Mercy have been traditionally divided into two categories, each with seven
elements. These are:
a. Corporal Works of Mercy- which concerns the material and physical
/ bodily needs of others.
1. To feed the hungry. 5. To shelter the homeless.
2. To give drink to the thirsty. 6. To visit the sick.
3. To clothe the naked. 7. To bury the dead.
4. To visit the imprisoned
b. Spiritual Works of Mercy -which concerns the spiritual needs of others.
1. To admonish the sinner. 5. To bear wrongs patiently.
2. To instruct the ignorant. 6. To forgive all injuries.
3. To counsel the doubtful. 7. To ptay for the living and the dead.
4. To comfort the sorrowful.
