INTRODUCTION
Dr. Patrick Baron is the Director of the Integrated Health

Science program at Western Carolina University. His work

focuses primarily on social and environmental determinants

of health and disparity. Dr. Baron has spent many years

shaping future leaders of public health!

Public Health for the Future:

The Role of Youth Today


Dr. Baron will examine the current state of the

US health and healthcare systems, and will

discuss the challenges and opportunities in

public health leadership for the next

generation.

The mission and approach of the Center are

unique in the nation because we are driven first

and foremost by a community agenda and guided

by the advice of community members. University

or other institutional partners must be willing to

accept this agenda and provide the flexibility

necessary to support it. The Center for Native

Health actively moves projects away from the

scenario in which Western research “studies us

[American Indians] to death".

Public Health
A program that focuses on the application of educational and

communications principles and methods to the promotion of

preventive health measures and the education of targeted

populations on health issues, and prepares individuals to function


as public health educators and health promotion specialists.

Includes instruction in human development, health issues across

the life span, population-specific health issues, principles and

methods of public health education, administration of health

education campaigns and programs, evaluation methods, public

communications, and applications to specific public health

subjects and issues.
