CHEMISTRY
Study of matter, defined as anything that has mass and takes up space
Is essential for meeting our basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, health, energy, and
clean air, water and soil
ATOM
Singe neutral particles
When atom combines, molecules are formed
2 atoms combine = diatomic molecules (ex. Carbon monoxide)
PARTICLE DIAGRAM
Help the students visualize the difference between an atom
Dalton proposed a series of diagram (1800s)
MOLECULES
Compositions of two or more particles
Comes from Latina Molecula meaning a unit of mass
Comes from the smallest unit of substant
Noted with the element symbol and subscript with the number of atoms
ION
Formed by the addition and removal of electrons because of Ionization proportions
Cations = positive charge
Anions= negative charge
IONIZING ENERGY
Also called ionization potential
Removal and addition of electron to become positive or negative
Increases because the ratio of protons to electron increases
IONIZATION
Changing atoms into charged ions
If it gain it becomes negatively charged and if loses it becomes positively charged
Formed by gain or loss of an electron to form an atom or molecule
Example pf this is sun and radiation
HEAT AND KINETIC ENERGY
