Kielland
On March 27, 1980, the semi-submersible drilling rig Alexander L. Kielland experienced
a devastating collapse in the Norwegian North Sea, killing 123 of the 212 personnel on
board. The safety standards for offshore oil and petrol activities underwent substantial
adjustments as a result of this tragedy, which is regarded as Norway's worst offshore
disaster.
• The accident occurred during a storm when one of the
platform's five legs suddenly collapsed, causing the
entire platform to tilt at a severe angle. The tilt caused
many of the platform's occupants to be thrown off
balance, and many of them fell into the sea.
