Question Sample

A student carried out a titration to find the approximate volume of
0.100 mol/dm3 sulfuric acid needed to neutralize 25.0 cm3 of sodium hydroxide
solution.

He obtained the following results.

Initial
26.85 28.15 26.90 24.95
reading/cm3
Final
1.75 4.85 3.65 1.65
reading/cm3
Volume of
25.10 23.30 23.25 23.30
acid used/cm3

Using his results above, calculate the concentration of the sodium hydroxide
used in this titration.

Answer

H2SO4 + 2NaOH à Na2SO4 + 2H2O

1 mole of H2SO4 : 2 moles of NaOH

From the titration results, the average volume of H2SO4 is 23.30 cm3

!".!"
No. of moles of H2SO4 = !""" × 0.100 = 0.00233 𝑚𝑜𝑙

No. of moles of NaOH = 0.00233 × 2 = 0.00466 𝑚𝑜𝑙

!"
Concentration of NaOH = 0.00466 ÷ !""" = 𝟎. 𝟏𝟖𝟔 mol/dm3 (3 s.f.)
